Ahrefs’ Digest #174: Content marketing ROI, adding a related posts section, and more

What a Google update does to a man. From SEO to rapper:

📰 News & updates

Google unleashes manual actions galore: Following the release of new search spam policy updates last week, Google has now also unleashed tons of manual actions on websites it believes are in violation of the new policies.

INP is officially a Core Web Vitals metric: It replaces FID.

🔝 SEO

Inspirational women and nonbinary SEOs: These are the top 26 SEOs whose expertise, results, and insights Despina admires. Names include Aleyda Solis, Jackie Chu, Areej AbuAli, Marie Amelia White, and more.

Does adding a related post section help your blog?: We tested this by adding a “Keep learning” section at the bottom of our posts. And it worked for us: Adding the section improved search traffic and our users spent more time on the site and viewed more pages!

You can’t compare backlink counts in SEO tools. Here’s why: When building an index of the web, companies have to make many choices around crawling, parsing, and indexing data. While there’s going to be a lot of overlap between indexes, there’s also going to be some differences depending on each company’s decisions. Comparing link indexes is hard because of all the different choices the various tools have made.

How 16 companies are dominating the world’s Google search results: These 16 companies are behind at least 588 individual brands.

💻 Digital marketing

Content marketing ROI: There is a simple formula for calculating ROI: ((Return from content − cost of content) / cost of content) * 100. But actually implementing this calculation in real life is tricky:

  • Costs can get complicated

  • Content has other benefits (customer support, build brand recognition, encourage upsells, etc.) that are difficult to measure

  • Attribution is tricky

Ryan shares three practical methods for quickly working out how much “value” you get from your content.

Content metrics from actual marketers: From publishing frequency to revenue/signups correlated with traffic, these are the content marketing metrics that actual content marketers use.

Who sends traffic on the web and how much?: SparkToro partnered with clickstream data provider, Datos and found that 63.41% of all US web traffic comes from Google. So, folks, SEO isn’t dead.

Till next time ;)
Cheers,
