When users start with easy fields (dropdowns), they input their email 31% more often [study]

An interesting study was executed by Truckers Report.

They tested two single-page opt-in forms:

#1. Asked for an email only.

#2. Asked to:
+ Choose jobs (checkboxes)
+ Select State
+ Select driving experience
+ And then - input their email

#2 outperformed #1 by 31%!

Why?

People start with easy fields (dropdowns, checkboxes) so that by the time they reach the hard field—email—the user thinks, “oh well I already started” (a known psychological phenomenon called “commitment and consistency” by Cialdini).
