I recently came across a quote that really REALLY hit home:

"Pessimists sound smart, optimists get rich."

This simple yet profound statement truly truly hits on the mindset needed to succeed in buying or building a business.

As someone who is "money and traffic agnostic," I believe that there's a perfect business opportunity out there for everyone. And that no one business type is better than another.

Whether you're interested in content sites, e-commerce brands, software businesses, or agencies, the key is to find the right fit for your unique skills, interests, and resources.

Content Sites: Still Thriving

Despite the ups and downs of Google updates, content sites can still be incredibly profitable.

And Google isnt dead y'all, we do SEO for several clients, and every single one of them is currently doing well. (trending up - knock on wood it stays that way)

Take, for example, my friends Colin and Oren have a website in the art space that's performing exceptionally for example:

But many are afraid of Google these days. Id be lying to you to say the last 12 months wasn't some of the largest google updates Ive seen in a decade. Doesn't mean its dead though!

Diversifying Traffic Sources

While we still get a lot of traffic from Google, it's essential to diversify into other channels as well. Nothing works exactly the same forever, so the trick is to be nimble and keep your finger on the pulse of what's working and what's not.

Anyone who has been seen my case study on my biggest site ever, MJObserver.com (sold in 2020, then the acquirer gutted it for parts, sold off again and now dead)

Knows that a MASSIVE amount of our traffic came from Facebook and Email. (and was doing $2M a year or so)

The game has always been about diversification in the media space, just now more than ever!

Opportunity in Struggling Websites

There's also a massive opportunity in buying websites that have been hit by Google updates. You can acquire a struggling website and leverage its existing content to drive traffic through other channels. Hasib Alic touched on it here:

• Pinterest: Many people are crushing it with Pinterest-based content today - a site with tons of content means you just need to make pins for it (working on a training for you all dont worry)
• and then of course, you should be gathering up that traffic from all those channels, getting them on an email list, and OWNING the traffic so you can get to your readers again and again

Embracing Optimism

Remember the quote from earlier? "Pessimists sound smart, optimists get rich."

This is incredibly true.

You can either be the person who always finds fault in everything or the person with a positive outlook who takes calculated risks.

Risk is inherently tied to reward, and with strategic thinking, you can increase your chances of success.

Finding Your Perfect Business

Take a sec to step back and think about the type of business you'd like to run:

• One that fits your skill sets (this can be learned)
• One that fits within your budget (you can get creative)
• One that interests you (this one isnt as easy to fix as the others)
