Before we get into today’s newsletter, a bit of news:

1) In June, I’ll be taking the month off from writing this newsletter. My wife, son, and I are moving from New York to Utah — for the skiing, yes, but mostly to be closer to grandparents who can help with the kiddo! — and moving with a 10-month-old is a handful. I’ll be back in early July with lots more good stuff. (Claire and I have already lined up a great month of stories for you all!)

2) But don’t worry — I’ve got one more newsletter next week, and it’s a great one.

Next week, I’ll be releasing the first-ever Inbox Collective ebook. It’s something I spent much of the winter and spring working on. The idea behind it came from conversations with readers who wanted to know: What questions should you ask to improve your newsletter?

So I created a resource to walk through the 50+ questions I ask my clients and then talk you through how to answer them to make your newsletter better.

More to come next week!

How Vidar Bergum Publishes Two Newsletters in Two Languages

Vidar and I met a few years ago when he replied to my newsletter’s welcome email. I was fascinated by what he told me.

Vidar, who was born in Norway, left a career in finance in 2015 to move to Istanbul and become a food writer. It’s a career pivot that’s paid off: A decade later, he’s a successful newsletter operator, cookbook author, and guide for in-person culinary tours of Istanbul.

But that’s not all: Vidar actually publishes two newsletters — both with paid subscription offerings — in two different languages.

So this week, Claire Zulkey’s bringing you his story. Inside, he explains:
  • How he manages his content calendar.
  • What he’s learned about delivering different content for two different audiences.
  • How he’s built out four different revenue streams for his newsletters.
  • How he uses AI to repurpose his content in multiple languages.
  • What metrics he tracks on a regular basis.
  • Why his culinary tour business actually helps him grow his subscription product.
Let’s dive into Vidar’s story →

In case you missed it...

How can you improve your ad strategy? Gretchen Rubin and Nico Cerdeira explained the tactics they’re using to sell more ads.

Beehiiv recently updated their pricing, so I made a few updates to our guide to six platforms for independent newsletters: AWeber, Beehiiv, ConvertKit, Ghost, Mailchimp, and Substack.

I really do need to write a whole article about the opportunity for email courses — I’m still so bullish on these! Until then, check out this case study about how Poynter built their first course.

From my reading list...

There are so many great nuggets from this conversation that Ann Handley did with actor BJ Novak, but this was my favorite: Precision and attention to detail are what make something noteworthy. (Total Annarchy)

Ephraim Gopin shared a few tips for non-profits who might be trying to fundraise during this fall’s election season. (1832 Communications)

We talked about it on stage at The Newsletter Conference a few weeks ago, but Chenell Basilio wrote about why growth doesn’t need to be your primary measure of success. (Growth in Reverse)

One thing to keep an eye on: It feels like we’re at the start of an acquisition era for newsletters. Here’s one example: Beehiiv founder Tyler Denk just acquired a newsletter as part of the growth efforts for his personal newsletter. (Founder Secrets)
