What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ We’ve been covering AI Overviews a lot lately (mostly dunking, tbh), but here’s a piece that offers 5 ways for advertisers to prepare for the AI Overviews expansion into the SERP:

→ Speaking of… this piece is a solid overview of the research into AI Overviews that’s been done so far, looking at what does and doesn't trigger AIO, what verticals are mostly likely to contain AIO, and how it stacks up against SGE answers (triggered 20% less, as of now).

→ We keep getting more clarity on the new Site Reputation Abuse policies, with it becoming clear now that white-label coupon sites- which were believed by many to be fine- are actually also subject to penalty.

→ As for the algo leak, this post from another SEO who discovered the leaked info is really something. A couple weeks before the leak, he emailed the bug team only to be told the data going public was planned— then, obvs, it ended up it wasn't. lol.

AI Insight 🤖

→ Speaking of Google, the updated AI-powered NotebookLM has expanded to 200+ countries and now can “source content from Google Slides and web URLs, in addition to the existing support for Google Docs, PDFs and text files.” Can ONE of Google’s AI products not be a major L? We wait.

→ Lots of noise happening at OpenAI? You don’t say. Not only was an employee fired for bringing safety concerns to the board, but NYT also just put out a contender for this week’s AI headline of the week: “OpenAI Insiders Warn of a ‘Reckless’ Race for Dominance.”

→ If that’s not a dealbreaker for you, though, how about OpenAI partnering up with Apple to help them catch up in the AI race, with a deal that gives “gives OpenAI access to hundreds of millions of Apple users, including ones that might have been hesitant to try ChatGPT otherwise.” Apple haters in shambles.

→ Seems like for everyone stoked about AI, 100 people are worried about it. And even if only a few of those worries are valid or make sense, there are some smart content creators out there reminding us that content quality matters and that AI presents an existential risk to human creators of content. Anyway, you might be interested in signing this open letter.

→ TikTok’s new guide to marketing on the platform makes a strong case for anyone who hasn't started using the platform yet: 1B active users, high engagement on the platform (92% of users globally take action after watching a TikTok video!), affordability, and creative flexibility.

→ Here's an update on how using "answer-specific CTAs" in your Instagram video content may harm engagement, and how it's a better idea instead to ask "open-ended questions and CTAs."

Best of MozCon: What to Do About Google’s Reddit Habit

Another SEO convention has come and gone, and most of us had better things to do than be there. Still, some of the presentations are interesting.

​Here’s this year’s schedule, which features links to download the presentation slides on topics like: Moving Beyond SEO Checklists, Decoding Searcher Bias for Content Success, Understanding Trust and Quality in the New Era of Content Discovery, Creating Local Dominance Through Your Digital Ecosystem, and more.

Probably the most interesting and relevant one that I came across was Crystal Carter’s “On the Hunt for Hidden Gems: Perspectives on UGC in the SERP,” which she also talks about on this podcast w/ Mordy Oberstein and Ross Simmonds if you’re looking for something a little less formal (episode titled “What to do about Google's reddit habit?”).

Basically, Reddit presents a very unique opportunity to not only learn about your customers, but to get their attention, too.
