Well known brand names continue to make waves in the web3 world. Recent announcements include Sony building their own layer 2 solution, Sotheby’s auctioning more digital works, and a group that is using blockchain tech to create tokenized assets to raise money to save a historical church!

Even Mastercard recently teamed up with Metamask to issue a new, crypto-powered debit card. The change is here my friends. Blockchain technology has come to stay and will just continue to become a more integral part of our digital future.

But anyway, on to gaming news!

Here are our hot topics at PlayToEarn this week for web3 and blockchain gaming.

Play to Earn with PlayToEarn’s Web3War Tournament 🔫

PlayToEarn is hosting a special 4v4, Web3War tournament starting on August 1st. Each round will be played in ranked deathmatch mode, best of three maps.

The prize pool consists of 100k FPS tokens, with a value of over $3,000! Prizes go to the top 8 teams.

This will be a single elimination bracket tournament, held in four rounds over two days. The battles will begin at 5pm UTC on each day. And you will need to join our Discord chat to find out who your opponents will be.

You can register for this tournament through the Community Gaming site and read the full set of rules there as well. If you plan on playing, be sure to register before August 31st!

This is just the first tournament scheduled. PlayToEarn will continue to host more tournaments in the future, celebrating the world of blockchain gaming!

PFPs as Avatars 🐱‍🐉

One of the long-promised utilities / benefits of gaming NFTs was their ability to be used in multiple products. Decentralization and standardization of NFT creation makes it so that, for the most part, any code that interacts with one type of NFT could potentially interact with all NFTs of that type!

However, while the tech was there, for many years, the desire has seemed to be lacking. Sure there were a few games that would allow cross-game NFT usage, but they were almost always from the same parent company and purposefully built to be interconnected.

But over the past year, and even the past few months, that has begun to change. Mainly with the ability to take your PFP NFT, even if not from a gaming collection, and use it as an avatar in-game, supporting unique traits and appearances. So if you have a completely unique PFP NFT, then you would have a completely unique avatar in-game as well - potentially one that can be used in multiple games!

This is actually pretty damn cool, and it’s nice to see it in action. Notable games that support PFPs from numerous collections include Pixels, Nifty Island, Open Season, Cosmic Royale, and Spellborne — though that is certainly not a complete list!
