What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ The August 2024 core update is over. Here’s what Google thinks you should know about it, and here’s a pretty thorough breakdown full of findings and early returns. The TLDR; “Most sites did not see significant or meaningful recoveries, from what we can tell. And even more sites saw even more declines or just stayed the same.” lol.

To be fair, if you expected Google to stay true to its word re: significant recoveries, that’s kinda on you at this point.

→ This article asks: “What are Twiddlers in Google’s ranking systems? And how can we use this knowledge to rank better?”

The answer? Twiddlers are “C++ code objects” aka “essentially algorithms” that adjust and re-order search results after initial ranking is done by using various signals to make recommendations (aka “twiddles”). Whether it's explaining the two types of Twiddlers or explaining why they matter for marketers, this is an informative article that ends up making some actionable suggestions for adjusting your SEO strategy based on the fact that Meta Descriptions, Diverse Results, and Freshness all matter.

→ This piece on how to get more Google Reviews has some good advice. TLDR; the article offers 9 suggestions— my top 5 from the list would probably be Optimize Your Google Business Profile, Share Your Google Review Link, Provide a Review QR Code, Respond to Current Reviews, and Send a Feedback Email. → As of Late October, Google Trend Notifications are going away.

→ Google’s AI Overviews have started popping up for signed-out searchers in the US, meaning it’s “100% rolled out to all US searchers.” FWIW, Here’s an analysis of how Semrush’s new AI Overviews tracking tool works.

AI Insight 🤖

→ Feedback from those with early access to SearchGPT suggests it’s “far from ready to replace Google.” The TLDR is that it still struggles with some shopping and local queries, and is having hallucination issues. Despite a million articles coming out over the last year with titles like Will ChatGPT be the new Google?, people are unimpressed with OpenAI’s first attempt at beating Google at its own game.

→ According to OpenAI Japan’s CEO, “GPT-Next” is on its way and will be “100x more powerful than GPT-4,” using a version of the ‘Strawberry’ advanced AI system.

→ Anthropic’s new Quickstarts repo is a new tool for developers, assisting in quicker and easier building of AI apps.

→ If you’ve been using AI to help with coding, this is good to know: different models work better with different programming languages. For example, GPT-4 Turbo is best for Java, Meta’s Llama 3.1 405B is best for Go, and Anthropic’s Sonnet 3.5 is best overall.

→ Finally, here’s a classic semrush overview, this time on how AI is impacting social media marketing. TLDR; while explaining how AI is being used for Content Creation and Scheduling, Content Repurposing, Audience Analysis and Engagement Strategies, Chatbots and Customer Service Personalized Advertising, and Automating Repetitive Tasks, the piece also explains shows some success stories, provides an overview of AI tools for social media, and more.
