In this week's video, I share my mixed reactions to the Google Search Liason Interview on the SE roundtable. While I agreed with some of Google's statements, I also questioned their effort on some of the smaller independent sites. Some key takeaways: core updates are bigger updates, Google is trying to improve search results, and site reputation abuse is done manually. I also talk about AI content and skilled content abuse. What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ Even if some of us are fully tuning out Google’s propaganda, it’s probably good that some people are reading through it, because there is some absolute BS going on: “Google — an illegal monopoly — is admitting in this interview that it is giving preferential treatment to larger market participants at the expense of smaller participants.”

→ Here’s a study on AI Overviews Link Selection, and here’s a thread breaking down that study. The TLDR? AI Overviews are more likely to cite content that ranks well:

“21.1% of Queries Trigger Overviews… 46.3% of the documents linked in the summaries were from the top organic search results for the exact match query.”

→ If you’re in the SaaS sphere, this breakdown of which SaaS companies lost the most SEO traffic in 2024 is pretty informative. If you think you've been clapped, just remember that Causal lost 99.52% of its 300K+ monthly traffic via manual penalty.

AI Insight 🤖

→ Is “AI worse than humans in every way”? Really? According to this government trial, when it comes to summarizing information: yes. The verdict was that “AI summaries often missed emphasis, nuance and context; included incorrect information or missed relevant information; and sometimes focused on auxiliary points or introduced irrelevant information.”

→ This piece asks how AI is impacting time, money and resources for SEOs. The hot take TLDR; it can positively impact all 3 by increasing efficiency… if used well. Color me shocked. Obvious AF conclusion, but the use cases are worth looking at.

→ OpenAI’s “Strawberry” is on the verge of dropping. Strawberry will be integrated with ChatGPT and will function as a standalone product and AI model that can fact-check itself, with rumors saying it will be much better at math, programming, and sophisticated reasoning. The price you pay for accuracy? It's slow AF.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ According to a recent study by Capterra, “Nearly Half of All Social Media Content Created by Businesses Will Be AI-Generated.” Some wild stats here that really paint a picture re: the state of AI integration and its future in the industry.

- by 2026, businesses across the globe expect “48% of their social media content will be AI-generated”
- “73% of businesses say their engagement and impressions on social media has increased with the use of GenAI, with 22% noting a significant increase”
- 94% of businesses are concerned about “the risk of spreading misinformation through AI-generated content”

→ Meta just dropped a Reels Marketing guide with some valuable intel. Beyond that, here’s a holiday edition. The three major essentials to master, apparently, are: "Build 9:16 video to make your Reels ads captivating," "Build with audio to make your Reels ads entertaining," and "Build in the safe zone so your message is clear." Considering 79% of respondents say they've purchased a product after watching Reels, it's worth getting your act together.

So, what makes a good Reel? According to Meta, a good Reel is entertaining, relatable, and digestible.

Tip of the Week: Risk Cringe, Win Big

→ Obviously, getting a “cringe” label is the risk you run for trying to be funny online, but maybe - just maybe- it’s worth it.

When consumers were asked what they like most about apps and social media platform ads, the runaway winner with a whopping 50%?

Humor.

Broken down here by MarketingCharts.com, Humor is preferred over “How To” Information, Music, Authenticity, and Story.

This rhymes with previous research by the same research group, NCSolution, which found that young people prefer “creativity, humor, and entertainment in ads” to information about the product, which runs counter to Baby Boomer preferences.
