What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ If you’re looking for the DL on the Google antitrust trial, here’s a Bloomberg overview re: how the US Justice Department is alleging that “Google has monopolized the technology used to buy and sell online display ads by restricting or eliminating the choices of its customers — both website publishers and advertisers.”

Microsoft and Meta are also catching some strays here, as a judge has deemed Google’s defense that it faces “fierce competition” from them to be “highly questionable.” lol. Oof.

→ Meanwhile, the EU is also “preparing to bring formal DMA charges against Google” for ranking its own products in Search results “higher than products surfaced by competing services.” Sounds familiar.

→ BTW, Google Ads recently dropped a video on how to level up your video ads w/ recent Google Ads AI enhancement tools. TLDR; more additional video sizes and ratios are available and the AI can also select key moments so the AI can make shorter versions of video ads.

→ If you’re looking for an overview of August core update, here’s a good one. TLDR; it was more of the same… PS, even some of those who saw some gains are now losing them.

→ If you care about AI Overviews, which FWIW really do seem to have the potential to impact your organic traffic, here’s the most recent update. One finding: they’re triggered “10-20% less for signed-out users.”

AI Insight 🤖

→ Speaking of Google, who can’t shut up about why marketers shouldn’t be using AI, the social media manager was pretty tone-deaf to post this (and then delete it):

→ Word on the street is that the start-up behind Grok’s image generator, Black Forest Labs, is raising $100M at a $1B valuation. BFL was co-founded by the engineers who built the technology behind Stability AI and the Grok / Elon tie-in is major here.

→ Perplexity's David vs. Goliath battle against Google continues with its new ad model: “brands will be able to bid for a sponsored question, which features an AI-generated answer approved by the advertiser.”

→ Amazon just released an AI assistant called “Amelia” in beta, for select US sellers, which is an “AI assistant for third-party sellers.” It’s designed to help resolve account issues, fetch sales, and access inventory data. Should drop in full form before the year is done.

→ Here’s an overview of “the new wave of AI content labeling.” Considering 82% of people want labels on AI content and there's still a major bias against AI-generated content, it's worth keeping up on.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ re: Meta AI— interestingly enough, of all Meta’s apps, people are using AI the most on WhatsApp, and almost nobody is using it on Instagram.

→ A new feature is being tested by YouTube. Creators now have the freedom to “edit their videos to remove age restrictions and restore videos that had been impacted due to certain Community Guidelines violations.”

→ Add X to the list of apps copping TikTok, as the app is dropping a video tab for scrolling. Also interesting— they’re even producing some original programming.

→ Speaking of X, looks like Elon & co. are backing down and won’t be taking on Brazil’s supreme court re: the country’s ban on the app.
