He had just won a national championship, but within hours, Nick Saban’s mind was elsewhere.

The legendary coach wasn’t concerned with the history his Alabama team had just made. He was instead focused on what lay ahead.

“I never once felt satisfied,” Saban recently said on the Pat McAfee Show. “By 1 o’clock in the morning, after we won a national championship, I was worried about next year’s team.”

Saban attributes his ability to avoid contentment as a pivotal factor in his sustained success over the better part of five decades.

“That wasn’t any fun because you never enjoyed what you accomplished, but it certainly helped us stay more consistent,” he said.
