Oyster: From Wizard of Oz MVP to 8-Figure Global HR SaaS

Tony Jamous is the co-founder and CEO of Oyster, a platform that simplifies global hiring and payroll.

Born in Lebanon, Tony he left as a teenager for better opportunities in France.

After studying computer science, he launched Nexmo, scaling it to $100M in revenue before selling to Vonage.

But Tony didn’t stop there. After managing teams across 45 countries at Nexmo, he saw how outdated international hiring was.

So, in January 2020, he launched Oyster.

Two months later, the pandemic drove remote work demand sky-high – but Oyster wasn’t ready.

Instead of turning customers away, Tony and his team improvised with manual processes while refining their product.

Since then, Oyster has faced massive growth, a tech downturn, and a pivot to efficient scaling. Today, they’re a fully remote team of 550 employees serving 2,000+ customers and closing in on $100M ARR.

In this episode, Tony shares:

  • How Tony validated his idea by talking to customers before building anything

  • Why he hired experienced leaders early, even though it was a risky move for an early-stage startup

  • How they turned manual work into an advantage when their product wasn't ready to meet customer needs

  • The “Buyer Purchasing Criteria” framework that helped Tony understand why customers buy (and how to use it in your startup)

  • How they've made remote work successful across 70 countries without any offices

I hope you it.

🤔 SaaS Insights

Stop Building. Start Solving.

If you think building everything for your SaaS from scratch proves you're a 'real' startup - think twice.

The tech world glorifies building from scratch.

Meanwhile, your runway shrinks fast and potential customers keep using competitors' products.

Here's the reality most founders miss:

Your first 10 paying customers don't care if you've built or bought your tech stack.

They care about solving a pain quickly and reliably.

The truth?

You can validate your market by buying off-the-shelf solutions while building your new features gradually.

This hybrid approach lets you:

  1. Generate revenue faster

  2. Learn from real customers

  3. Preserve runway for growth

  4. Build only what truly needs to built

Remember, your job isn't to build the perfect architecture.

It's to solve problems faster than your competition.

Build or buy? Start with 'solve' instead.

This week's book recommendation is from Tony:
