It’s Wednesday, December 11, and this week, Claire Zulkey talks with the team at the Republic, in Nigeria, about what they’ve learned about building a media company centered around newsletters…

This year, we decided to make a concerted effort to cover newsletters outside the U.S. I’m proud of these stories, about creators in India and the Philippines and larger orgs in places like Brazil. We’ve covered newsletters in 12 different countries — but there’s a lot more to cover! If you’ve got an internationally-based newsletter you think we should highlight on the site, hit reply and let me know…

While I’m on the topic: If you’ve got a case study or a story you want to publish on Inbox Collective, shoot me an email…

Big shoutout to the team at Sponsy, which built this free tool to generate ad performance reports. It works with about 10+ email platforms, too…

Diversify, Monetize, Share: The Republic’s Strategy to Build a Mission-Led Newsletter

In 2018, Wale Lawal started a student publication in Nigeria to cover critical issues affecting Africa. Six years later, that publication — which he called the Republic — has raised $800,000, and they’re building it out into a fully-fledged media company.

Like the New Yorker, the Republic has a print subscription business, an ad business, and a shop where readers can purchase prints or merch. Like the Financial Times, they both publish original reporting and also have a consulting arm. And like many indie operators, they’re thinking about launching subscriber-only newsletters and have a donation strategy.

So for the latest edition of The International Inbox, we talked with the Republic about what they’ve learned about building a media company — and the crucial role that newsletters play in their strategy.
