An opener for conversations vs. accusations.
Leaders (or anyone with perceived power) don’t tend to get much empathy sent their way. But soliciting a bit of empathy can be a very useful frame for a feedback conversation. So, complain to your team about how hard you have it! Obviously (please let it be obvious!) kidding. Am adding italics because I’m nervous and want the kidding part to be extra clear. Instead… when you want to share your version of events with a team member start with this: So, if you were me and (situation) and (team member action without descriptor words - just what happened) ….
This frame helps your team member start thinking through the situation for themselves (often resulting in ohhhhh) vs. feeling attacked. You may still need to share your perception but it’s significantly easier to have a healthy conversation about a perception vs. a critique. Ttx is brought to you by Newance.
