Talent is something all leaders care about but most have trouble defining. Exceptional people have an unstoppable feeling about them. That doesn’t mean they are reckless. In fact, exceptional talent are quite thoughtful. They can see and decide at both the task and the system level. It helps a lot if someone has a natural aptitude for the work they’re doing. Skills can be taught. But aptitude has a way of pressing the gas. So by my definition: Talent = judgment x drive x aptitudeIf you only have the drive, you get a mess left by impetuous action. If you only have the judgment, you just get complaints dressed up as “identifying problems” without any action on solving them. The person with natural gifts who doesn’t apply them isn’t actually making an impact. Steven Pressfield said this best in Turning Pro: “The sure sign of an amateur is he has a million plans and they all start tomorrow.” Exceptional people are starting today.
