Weekly Top Ten Resources for Remote Teachers & Learning from Home

Remember that song from the ‘80s, “I believe the children are our future/teach them well and let them lead the way”? Ok, it’s a little hokey, but sometimes hokey works! As the world changes rapidly around us, we teachers have an opportunity to shape a new narrative, one that focuses on equity, justice, and empathy, and that gives our students the tools for being thoughtful, active, compassionate citizens — and eventually leaders — of our enduring participatory democracy. We became teachers to change the world. Let’s do it!

Summer is upon us, so take a well-deserved moment to refresh, and then let’s put on our thinking caps, grab our plan books, and get to work...

🧘🏾‍♀️ Self-Care for Educators

  1. If you’re thinking about learning something new this summer, how about learning to breathe? Of course we all know how to breathe, but we can learn to breathe with intention, which brings calm, clarity of mind, and immune-boosting properties. Learn from a master breather.
  2. Self-care means taking the time to do something good for yourself. Preparing a beautiful glass of something or plate of something is the kind of self-pampering that’s good for the soul. Check out this gorgeous, refreshing, non-alcoholic but still grown-up take on the Shirley Temple. 🍹

💻 Teaching in the Time of COVID

  1. A "windows and mirrors" approach to literacy offers students a balanced selection of literature. Some books provide students with a view out into the world, exploring people who may look and act different from them, whereas other books offer a mirror, allowing kids to see themselves reflected in the classroom learning. Here’s a great list to help you build a windows and mirrors classroom library (or ELA or Social Studies curriculum), and a second list that focuses specifically on Black authors writing for youth. 📚
  2. Thinking ahead to next year’s math or science class? We’ve got you covered! Master STEM educator @karikokka has compiled a fantastic list of resources for teaching science and math for social justice. In addition, here’s a varied and interesting list of virtual summer math PD offerings. More immediately, The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship is offering a free virtual symposium on 6/12 titled STEM Teaching and Learning in Challenging Times. Register here. ⚖️
  3. We don’t know yet what our return to school will look like, but we know there will likely be some continuation of at-home learning. This excellent article details seven strategies for an approach to remote learning that helps develop student agency.
  4. In this article (and podcast), the CEO of the Silicon Schools Fund shares some interesting takeaways from the past three months of remote learning, and what we need to consider in order to be more successful come fall. His remarks on building student relationships are particularly on point.🎙️
  5. Sponsored by Smore: Create and share beautiful newsletters, updates, and remote lessons in a snap. Engage students, parents, and colleagues.

🤪 Parenting while Working Remotely

  1. It’s easy to neglect financial literacy, especially with kids. “Save your money for something special,” is often the extent of it. Well, no more! Tyler and Jean’s Lemonade Stand is an engaging, illustrated kids’ book that will give your kids the tools they need to grow into financially literate and responsible citizens. It’s lemonade stand season, so there’s no time like the present to get started! 🍋
  2. As long as we’re on parenting and books, here’s a powerful examination of race, family, and schooling through the lens of a bilingual multiethnic mom and her experiences raising a son who is presumed to be white.

🌈 Staying Inspired and Finding Joy

  1. Whether you’re marching in the streets, or marching around your house, here’s a playlist designed to keep you going!
  2. For the second year in a row, a diverse group of educators have spent the month of May writing a blog post per day about the power of being the teacher they wish they’d had as kids. At once joyful, fierce, moving, and tender, their posts are nothing short of inspirational, each and every one.

That’s it for this week. If you enjoyed our Top 10, go ahead and forward this to a friend or colleague who you think might enjoy it, or share it on your favorite social media platform. If you received it from a friend, subscribe here.
