Album Daily - Bigger and Deffer

Album Daily
#39 - The Week of August 10 - 14

Hope everyone had a safe weekend.

It has been fun in my house lately, as we found out that we are having our first child 👶🏼My wife and I couldn't be more excited, so I'm pumped to share it with you all!  Maybe we will get an Album Daily onesie for the little one.  Now THAT is a great idea.

Anyway, some great albums lined up this week.  I think the Glass Animals release could win some major awards at the end of the year, so don't miss it.

Now, turn your speakers up.

Genre: Psychedelic Pop/Alternative
Release Date: August 7, 2020
Top Tracks: Tokyo Drifting, Heat Wave, Your Love (Deja Vu), Tangerine
Similar Artists: MISSIO, Phantogram

With their first album in 4 years, Glass Animals release a no-question album of the year candidate in Dreamland. Their intriguing mix of indie pop and hip-hop set them apart from other alternative groups, and add an edginess to their sound. The content of this record is introspective, and as singer/songwriter/producer Dave Bayley articulated to Apple Music, answers the question of "How did I get here?" It highlights his formative years in a way that protrudes enough nostalgia to transform any '90's kid back to the golden years. I'd be remiss to not mention my favorite track from the album, "Tokyo Drifting". It really is a great sample of their sound, traversing from indie pop to a hip-hop beat and verse that go so hard.

Genre: Electronic/Indie Rock
Release Date: July 27, 2018
Top Tracks: Thanks for Calling, Left, I Don’t Know (Coda)
Similar Artists:  Trent Reznor, Caribou

Labeled as the last SONOIO record from Italian musician Alessandro Cortini, 2018’s Fine followed in the lines of his previous work under this stage name. It is synth-heavy, packs the punch of indie rock, but experiments with eclectic instruments like the Xylophone. It’s easy to get lost in the spacey synths, using their backdrop as a means for thinking, letting you mind wander. Be careful though, because Cortini will jolt you back to reality with a smash of bass and passionate vocal modulations. Cortini is most widely known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, but his SONOIO project is worth the listen.

Jade Bird

Jade Bird

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: April 19, 2019
Top Tracks:  Uh Huh, If I Die, Lottery, I Get No Joy
Similar Artists: Alice Merton, Janis Joplin

Jade Bird sings with a fire and calloused animosity that is so special. She’s tells it exactly how it is; I don’t think she even knows what “sugar coating” means. On the single, “Uh Huh”, Bird lays into a man who is being played by his lady, and humiliating him, as he previously did to her. “If you’re thinking that she’s good. God knows, God knows. She got you on your knees like a little boy. Everybody sees that you’re just a little toy.” This shows her sharp personality, one that she proudly radiates. Because of this, she knows that she needs an equally edgy partner, as she sings “You are good and you are pure. The angel knocking at my door. But I need something, something more.” Overall, the album is extremely consistent, with no slow points at all. Bird has all the talent in the world, it will be fun to watch her take on the music industry.

Bigger and Deffer

LL Cool J

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date: July 22, 1987
Top Tracks: I'm Bad, Get Down, "Ahh, Let's Get Ill"
Similar Artists:  Ice Cube, Nas

Bigger and Deffer is the second full length album from the longtime Def Jam recording artist from Queens, New York, LL Cool J. This album is a microcosm for the early hip-hop movement, signifying, as LL Cool J says, that "R&B (and soul) is dead", and it is time for hip-hop to take over. If you ever watched the hit show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the sound of this music will seem familiar, as the sounds that defined late '80's rap are present throughout. LL Cool J raps about being the best rapper, and getting ladies, but truthfully, that is most of the content. In retrospect, it makes this album fun, lighthearted, and an all around treat. In the end, all LL Cool J wants is summed up in the statement, "When I retire, I'll be worshipped like an old battleship." Worshipped is a strong word, but with two greatest hits albums, and people still talking about a 1987 album in 2020, I think he's done pretty well for himself.

Turbulence

Ella Vos

Genre: Pop
Release Date:  July 31, 2020
Top Tracks: Turbulence, Burning Bridges, Carousel
Similar Artists: LĂĄpsley, Lewis Del Mar

Ella Vos releases her second full length album, Turbulence, that highlights her silky smooth vocal talent. Trained as a classical pianist, Vos originally gained prominence as the keyboardist for BORNS, the popular alternative act. On this album, she steers more toward minimalistic electropop, a sign of her confidence in the power of her vocals. Her lyrics are filled with fresh metaphors and radiant imagery that shows her handle on poetry, however, it is witty enough for anybody to grasp and enjoy. The highlights for me are “Burning Bridges”, an ironically upbeat and positive sound for the lyrical content, accompanied by a traditional Latin percussion rhythm, and the title track, “Turbulence”, that houses minimalistic verses that open to big, broad choruses.
