The Waterfall II

My Morning Jacket

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: July 10, 2020
Top Tracks: Still Thinking, Feel You, Run It, Magic Bullet
Similar Artists: Band of Horses, Grizzly Bear

I'll be honest, on the first listen through The Waterfall II, nothing really stood out to me. Then I listened again. And again. And again. And it sucked me into a world of calm, gentle, folky reflections of Jim James and the gang (with the exception of the hard-rocking "Wasted"). The Waterfall II is more subdued and less experimental than their previous releases, which shows a band that is content and reflective. From the fluttery guitar on "Feel You", to the dissonant break on "Still Thinking", this still feels like an MMJ record, just one that is meant to comfort. James has said that he felt like "Spinning My Wheels" during quarantine, and hopes that listeners will identity with that track, and feel comfort knowing that we are going through it together.

Upside Down 2020

Buju Banton

Cover 2
Spotify Logo
Apple Music Logo
Youtube Logo
Genre: Reggae/Dancehall
Release Date: June 26, 2020
Top Tracks: Blessed, Helping Hand, Memories, Cherry Pie
Similar Artists:  Shaggy, Damian Marley, Gregory Isaacs

Buju Banton has been a mainstay in the reggae genre for over 30 years, even though this is his first release in the last decade. Traditionally sticking to dancehall tunes, this album is no different, with a few nice surprises. He employs John Legend, Stephen Marley, and Pharrell Williams on separate tracks, and they all flow extremely well and natural together. Banton seems to feel a sense of overwhelming purpose, stating "I’m alive, there must be a reason. I was given one more chance, my hearts still beating." This purpose could be to inspire others, and spread good vibes, which he certainly does on "Helping Hand", proclaiming all of us to "lend a helping hand" to our neighbors and those around us.

HERE WE GO!

Walk Off The Earth

Genre: Pop
Release Date: October 25, 2019
Top Tracks:  I’ll Be There, Addicted, Lost In You
Similar Artists: AJR, Fun.

Walk Off The Earth’s album HERE WE GO! came after the loss of band-mate Mike Taylor. They write a beautiful tribute to him, aptly titled, “Mike’s Song”, that sees the band starting to heal from this devastation. They sing, “I know you’ll always be with me. But I can’t shake the heartache. Even if the day don’t break, it’s gonna be okay.” Their sound on this album exudes electropop with a hint of tropical house - a mix of AJR and Kygo. Many of the tracks have choruses that are loud chants, backed by the tropical synths we’ve heard from Kygo. They’ll make you want to hit the beach and blare this album in the sun.

Wish You Were Here

Pink Floyd

Genre: Rock/Psychedelic Rock
Release Date: September 12, 1975
Top Tracks: Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts 1-5
Similar Artists:  King Crimson, Genesis, Tame Impala

I can only imagine the pressure Pink Floyd felt, having to create a follow-up to Dark Side of the Moon. It’s like Michelangelo having to create something after the painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, or Frederic Auguste Bartholdi after creating the Statue of Liberty. As can be expected, the initial reaction to the release of Wish You Were Here was lukewarm. In the minds of many, if the follow-up album was not as good (or better) than the previous, it was a letdown. In reality, this attitude softened over time, and Wish You Were Here grew to be well accepted and revered as a quality work. Staying true to form, Pink Floyd explores sonic soundscapes while interlacing harmonized chants that erupt at the climax into soft, smooth instrumentals.

Surf

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment

Genre: Neo-Soul/Hip-Hop/Funk
Release Date:  May 29, 2015
Top Tracks: Sunday Candy, Slip Slide, Vibes to Pass
Similar Artists: Thundercat, The Internet, Anderson .Paak

Donnie Trumpet (the former stage name of Nico Segal) combined with The Social Experiment (a band featuring Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, among others) on a fun, neo-soul album with their 2015 release, Surf. It is a collection of great musicianship, arranged and collaborated by the aforementioned talents. Some of the tracks are absolute jams, especially during the alternating trumpet and saxophone work that sound meant to be set alongside Chance The Rapper's trademark flow. "Nothing Came to Me" is an interesting foray into improvised trumpet, that seems disjointed and forced. It is later followed by them opposite "Something Came to Me", a heavily organized track with layered depth and a great trumpet solo. The parallel of these two tracks is both ironic and beautiful.
