Album Daily - Brightest Blue

Album Daily
#36 - The Week of July 20 - 24

One of the positives outcomes from the last couple months is the access to musicians (and anybody, really) livestreaming from their homes.

It has given us a look into the lives of the people that we otherwise would have no way to access.

One of these occurred last week, when Mike Rosenberg (aka Passenger) livestreamed himself playing his newly released album, Patchwork, in full, from his home.  How cool is that?

If you want to check out the video, it's linked in the Youtube icon under the Patchwork write-up, and I highly recommend checking it out.

Now, turn your speakers up!

Brightest Blue

Ellie Goulding

Genre: Pop
Release Date: July 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Brightest Blue, Power, Close to Me, Worry About Me
Similar Artists: Florence + The Machine, Lady Gaga, Charlie XCX

Brightest Blue, the new release from Ellie Goulding, is a powerful statement about Goulding as a musician, solidifying that she cannot be confined to a box as a vocalist, musician, or songwriter. She is, without a doubt, all three. Released as a double album, the first, Brightest Blue, is intimate and vulnerable. The majority consists of Goulding at a keyboard, accompanied by euphoric choral builds and irregular verse cadences, which solidify her style and songwriting talent, all at the same time. The second album, EG.0, is made up of the upbeat, lighthearted, chart-topping tracks that mimic her most popular work of the past. When these two competing albums are put together in one release, we see the overall power of Ellie Goulding.

BRELAND EP

BRELAND

Genre: Country/Hip-Hop/R&B -> Not a typo, read below.
Release Date: May 22, 2020
Top Tracks: My Truck, In the Woulds, WiFi
Similar Artists:  Lil Nas X, Niko Moon

Even though BRELAND’s first release My Truck was a massive viral success, he is no one trick pony. Traditionally, he has stuck to R&B, but this album, BRELAND EP, is an experiment into the new world of country-trap. He fuses hip-hop and country so effortlessly, creating a truly unique sound. The sky is the limit for this 24 year old out of Atlanta, as he is at the forefront of this seemingly booming genre. Interestingly, a few of the songs teeter more towards pop/R&B, showing his impressive talent and versatility. The features on this album are massive, garnering guest stops from Chase Rice, Sam Hunt, and Lauren Alaina.

Muzz

Muzz

Genre: Indie/Alternative
Release Date: June 5, 2020
Top Tracks:  Bad Feeing, Broken Tambourine, Evergreen
Similar Artists: The National, Interpol

The self titled debut from indie group, Muzz, is poetic and spacey. The group includes members of Interpol, The Walkman, and Bonny Light Horsemen, so it is easy to see the similarities in these acts. The deep, baritone voice of the lead vocalist, Paul Banks, leaves enough room for experimental instrument work from the other band members. It seems as though Banks’s voice is used as a tool to accentuate the instruments, not the other way around, as is usual. Throughout the album, nothing is straight forward. All of the lyrics are poetic, and require thought to interpret/understand. Luckily, the arrangements account for this, as the instrumentals allow for pensive thought.

Dock of the Bay Sessions

Otis Redding

Genre: Soul
Release Date: May 18, 2018 (as a compilation of works from the 1960's)
Top Tracks: (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, Hard to Handle, Amen
Similar Artists:  James Brown, Marvin Gaye

Released in 2018 as a compilation of some of Otis Redding's best work, Dock of the Bay Sessions shows just how influential Redding is. Snippets and sounds from these tracks show up in modern music regularly, and inspired an entire line of musicians. "Hard to Handle" was covered by the Black Crowes, and became one of their most widely known songs. "Amen" turned into "Take Me to Church" from Hozier, an absolutely massive, culture-bridging track. "I've Got Dreams to Remember" was covered by Buddy Guy and John Mayer. Certainly, Redding inspired many more than these few listed artists, but either way, his voice is known throughout modern culture.

Patchwork

Passenger

* As a treat to fans, Passenger livestreamed a playing of Patchwork on Youtube, which I've linked above.

Genre: Singer/Songwriter
Release Date:  July 10, 2020
Top Tracks: Sword from the Stone, Swimming Upstream, Summer Rain
Similar Artists: Vance Joy, Kodaline, Milky Chance

In typical Passenger fashion, Mike Rosenberg delivers intimate, thoughtful folk-pop ballads that make listeners grapple with their humanity. His effectiveness in songwriting is in meeting the listeners where they are, and his talent is unmatched in this area. The lyrics of “Swimming Upstream” are lived everyday by many of us, “Staring at a screen that I don’t get much from. Staring so long, can’t see wood from the trees. Or the birds from the bees.” Rosenberg is able to verbalize specific feelings with relatable imagery in a way that sets him apart, and has built him a considerably loyal following.
