Mixtape Vol. 1

Genre: Country/R&B
Release Date: August 13, 2020
Top Tracks: Worldwide Beautiful, Worship You, BFE
Similar Artists: Chris Lane, Thomas Rey, John Legend

Modern country artists tend to get a lot of hate from non-country fans (and sometimes with good reason), but you have to approach some of these albums in a different way. If you enter into Kane Brown’s, Mixtape Vol. 1, with the mindset that it is not a country or R&B album, but instead, a fusion of the two, you open yourself up to appreciate the inventiveness and creativity. Certainly, some of the songs lean one way or the other, but that is the beauty. Brown is trying to be no one but himself, and that deserves respect. “Worship You” and “Last Time I Say Sorry” could fit on an R&B Album, and the fun, simple country song “BFE” could have been a throwback Alan Jackson hit. The song that will have a lasting impact, however, is “Worldwide Beautiful”. It’s perfectly timed message of equality will ring true for years to come.

Purple Noon

Genre: Dream Pop
Release Date: August 7, 2020
Top Tracks: Time to Walk Away, Face Up, Don’t Go
Similar Artists:  Toro Y Moi, Beach House

Ernest Greene, the man behind the pop/electronica project, Washed Out, tells Apple Music, “I was really influenced by a lot of older recordings and I wanted my records to have a slightly warmer sound that might sound slightly vintage. With this one, it was very much just trying to sound as bright and as powerful as possible.” The result, Purple Noon, is an incredibly euphoric and mesmerizing mix of dream pop. He sings from the heart, outlining his hurt on “Time to Walk Away” due to the natural growing apart of a relationship. It continues on “Reckless Desires”, as he is having a hard time grasping the lies and deceit of his partner, singing, “Everytime I turn my back, you find yourself in someone else’s bed.” Through this heartbreak, he is able to create something beautiful, the euphoric melodies present on Purple Noon.

Last Year Was Weird, Vol 2

Tkay Maidza

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: August 7, 2020
Top Tracks:  My Flowers, Grasshopper, Don’t Call Again
Similar Artists: SZA, 070 Shake

Zimbabwe-born and Australian resident, Tkay Maizde, releases the second part of her Last Year Was Weird trilogy. She has a smooth fusion of rap and R&B, flowing between the two like a surgeon switching tools. The content of this second installment is undeniably darker, but it shows off her impressive flow more than the others. She really seems to shine over lo-fi beats, where she can take the time to explore a topic and just flow, like on “Flower”. Contrast that song with “Awake” or “Grasshopper”, and you can tell that she is not only extremely talented, but a total badass.

Eat a Peach

The Allman Brothers Band

Genre: Rock
Release Date: February 12, 1972
Top Tracks: Ain't Wastin' Time No More, Melissa, Blue Sky, Little Martha
Similar Artists:  Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton

Not many bands would put a 33 minute live recording on a normal studio album, but not many bands are The Allman Brothers Band. This is the group that pioneered the twin lead guitar paradigm that is still seen in modern rock music today. Their third studio album, Eat a Peach, was released less than six months after band leader Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident, and it was dedicated to him. It contains many fan favorite tracks, such as "Melissa" and "Ain't Wastin' No Time". But as the name of the 33 minute live recording, "Mountain Jam", suggests, this group is best when they let themselves go, and just jam. They feed off each other, do not overpower one another, and find ways to accentuate everyone's strengths. The final song, "Little Martha", is an acoustic instrumental that belongs in the company of the all time acoustic greats.

Maybe We Could

Kllo

Genre: Pop
Release Date:  Electropop/Alternative
Top Tracks: Somehow, Ironhand, 1 Up
Similar Artists: Clairo, Purr

One of the benefits of following younger artists/bands is seeing their sound change and mature over time. Kllo, the duo from Melbourne, is exploring their sound, and creating more detailed, thorough music than before. Apple Music even changed the genre on their latest release, Maybe We Could, from Electronic to Alternative, acknowledging that their sound has grown into something different. At times, the soothing, gentle vocals have the feel of mellow R&B, but then they break into James Blake-esque bass sounds on “Ironhand”, and it’s impossible to not respect the detail and production quality. This album’s single, “Somehow” is a nice mix of electropop, that I could see gaining some popularity on the radio soon.
