Turning The Tide | Fashion Challenge | Queen Of History

Hello and welcome to a new edition of the Upturn, the newsletter born out of the desire to do something that will improve the communities within our reach.

This week I found
this post about Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery that roughly translates to “join with gold,” to be both soothing and inspiring.

Kintsugi takes something that is broken and doesn’t just put it back together, but it does so in a way that makes the
original piece even more beautiful and unique. Not a bad philosophy, is it?

More stories about
overcoming adversities below.

In the
Upside, one woman fought back from a brain tumor to build the world’s largest sustainable aquaculture investment fund and one Florida family launched a business to provide jobs for people with autism.

In
Up-And-Coming, two founders want to increase awareness of mental health resources in the Black community and more fashion brands unveil plans to become more sustainable.

In
Uplifting, Regina King makes history in Venice and scientists discover what we have in common with bats.

Finally, in the
Wrap-Up, the numbers bringing a smile this week are 4, 16, and 3,662.

In the space of a decade Amy Novogratz went from being diagnosed with a potentially deadly brain tumor to running Aqua-Spark, a Netherlands-based sustainable aquaculture investment fund that is the largest of its kind, attracting $148 million from 190 investors across 29 countries.

Unemployment rates for people with autism is approximately 85%. Concerned about their son’s future, one Florida family decided to launch a business where he could thrive. That idea turned into the Rising Tide Car Wash, a social enterprise that created nearly fifty new jobs in the community for adults with autism.

Getting It Done

The Up-And-Coming

Breaking Taboos

Breaking Taboos

Corey Lewis and Thomas Drew cofounded 1And1 Life to provide a platform enabling Black people to access resources and education about mental health. One of their key mantras is to “drive home the point that there is strength in vulnerability.”

How They Do It

As two more fashion brands—Tommy Hilfiger and Timbaland—announce plans to decrease their environmental footprint, here’s how companies can put the idea of circularity into practice in a meaningful and permanent way.

Regina King became the first African American female director to have a film selected at the Venice Film Festival, this year in its 77th edition. Her directorial debut One Night In Miami was received with critical acclaim and has potential to make history again, at the Oscars 2021.

Why It Matters

Mammal Language

Baby talk, or motherese, is a common phenomenon in humans. Adults often use a higher pitch and slower tempo when talking to an infant than they would with another adult. A new study from Free University of Berlin suggests bats use baby talk, too.

How It Works

The Wrap-up

4 - Northern lights chasers committed to bringing the experience of the aurora borealis straight to your social media feed.

16 - stunning pictures of wildlife to remind us of our place in the natural world and our responsibility to protect it.

3,662 - pieces making up LEGO’s new, fan-suggested creation: a working grand piano.

"We all need to embrace our uniqueness, stop comparing ourselves to others, and love ourselves more."
