Senegal’s first female pro surfer, A TikToker educating millions on the Deaf community, Internships in climate & sustainability.

Welcome to The Bloom, a newsletter to bloom into your best self! Every Sunday, our team sends a Bloom with small seeds of joy from empowering job opportunities, to inspiring news and businesses: all with an intersectional feminist lens.

First black woman to join International Space Station's crew: Though more than a dozen Black Americans have traveled to space since Guion Bluford became the first to do so in 1983, none has had the opportunity to live and work in space for an extended period, as the ISS has enabled more than 200 astronauts to do since 2000. This week, NASA announced that Jeanette Epps will join a 2021 mission. >> Full Story

After Afghan women asked #WhereIsMyName, a small victory: Afghan citizens’ national identification cards have long included the name of card holder’s father; now they will also note the name of the citizen’s mother. The step, announced by the government this week, has long been an aim of women’s rights activists. >> Full Story

A poster campaign begins in France to spotlight the country's femicide crisis: France has one of the highest femicide rates in western Europe, and this week the names of 122 women murdered by men over the past year in France were plastered onto a Paris wall as part of a memorial to mark the first year of a poster campaign by “les colleuses” (the gluers). >> Full Story

“There’s a reason that the story has been so resonant for, what, over 1,300 years?”
The latest version of Mulan is released, and one writer took the opportunity to look back at the female warrior’s evolution from when she first appeared in a poem, titled the “Ballad of Mulan”, in the fifth or sixth century.

TikToker @chrissycanhearyou uses her experience as a Deaf woman to educate millions about the Deaf community and teach people sign language.

Senegal’s first female pro surfer makes waves in international headlines:"I thought: why don't I go surfing, represent my country, represent Africa, represent Senegal as a Black girl?"

Soldaderas is a new brand inspired by the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution, and aims to arm women with the tools to escape violence in Mexico. The collection features pants made of vintage tablecloths and curtains found in Mexico, partially to subvert the traditional domestic roles of Mexican women. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to a foundation in Mexico that supports shelters helping victims of domestic violence.

Before becoming a full-time athlete, Fernanda Marciel worked as an environmental lawyer. And this year she broke multiple records by climbing two mountains in the Alps in one day.

Netflix releases Emily’s Wonder Lab, a new interactive science show whose leading scientist breaks the traditional mold: “I filmed the entire thing 9 months pregnant. So there is now a female-led science show on the biggest streaming platform in the world hosted by a pregnant woman - available world wide.“

The Berlin Film Festival is doing away with gendered “actor” and “actress” categories, and will be giving out only “best actor” awards.

In many settings around the world, it’s estimated that 80-90% of disputes are dealt with outside of formal courts. Many of those seeking support outside traditional systems are women and on Sept. 10 you can join an international webinar exploring the topic of women and informal justice systems, and how to expand their access to justice.

This week’s reflection is brought to you by Amber on The Bloom team
more on her (and us!) soon. 🤍

Megan Jayne Crabbe, also known as bodyposipanda, is undoubtedly one of my favorite, most impactful Instagram accounts to follow. I first started following her a few years ago while actively struggling with an eating disorder and I was drawn to her unapologetic yet loving approach to body positivity and anti-diet culture.

An anorexia survivor and biracial woman, Megan emphasizes the importance of including and featuring individuals of all identities, especially those who are disabled, plus-sized, LGBTQIA+ and/or people of color, in the body positivity movement. Crabbe’s posts include fun videos of her dancing without shame, calling out racism and fatphobia, and encouraging self-compassion and beneficial mental health behaviors.

Bodyposipanda is an account I genuinely love seeing on my Instagram feed, especially as I work to transform my social media into a more positive, informative space. Her book, Body Positive Power, is a great and freeing read I recommend to those who struggle with eating disorders and those tired of diet culture and fatphobia.
