The Wall-Westbrook Trade Was an Act of Total Desperation

Russell Westbrook for John Wall seems like a trade that would happen only in NBA 2K. But it’s become a reality because the Rockets and Wizards are both under immense pressure to get better fast or they risk losing their franchise players. Along with Wall, the Wizards sent a heavily protected 2023 first-round pick to the Rockets to complete the deal. With so much at stake, this trade reeks of desperation. But more than that, it was made out of necessity.

The Spurs Are Changing Their Stripes

Now that the NBA has released the designs for the 2020-21 City Edition jerseys, I can definitively say what I’ve known for weeks: The Spurs have the best jersey in the NBA.

The Fiesta jersey harkens back to the Spurs’ iconic warmup wear and court design from the ’90s, and pays homage to San Antonio’s vibrant history and culture, and its Hispanic community in particular. It is a welcome splash of color to the franchise’s rather drab palette of white, black, gray, and, when the team feels really frisky, camo. Teal, pink, and orange stripes underline an elegantly scripted “San Antonio,” the first time the city’s name has graced the front of the Spurs’ jersey since 1989. The rowel that dots the “i” is the rancher’s equivalent of a chef’s kiss.

Dan Le Batard and the Twilight of the “Former Journalist”

YouTube/Ringer illustration

It’s no surprise Dan Le Batard is leaving ESPN. The news was so inevitable that if Le Batard saw it on a radio rundown, his own contrarianism would make him pick a less obvious topic. Did you guys see this Cris Collinsworth thing … ?

But his move is still revealing. When Jemele Hill made a Le Batard–style leap to TV, she dubbed herself a “former journalist.” Former journalists were print stars. A decade ago, in an odd twist of fate, they were handed the keys to ESPN. Former journalists had the run of the network; it was their playpen, their ATM machine. Not every former journalist has left ESPN for Substack yet. But Le Batard’s exit makes it clear their golden age is over.

Dolly Parton Is Universally Beloved. But Did She Ever Need the Validation?

Getty Images/Ringer illustration

“You don’t have to look like this,” says Barbara Walters to Dolly Parton in 1977, having just asked Parton to stand up and vamp a bit to better show off, well, you know. Walters air-traces a cartoonish female figure with her hands and everything, like a horny teenage boy, and yet she sounds almost pained, phrasing her underlying question to the bubbly country superstar like a plea, like an intervention. “You’re very beautiful. You don’t have to wear the blonde wigs. You don’t have to wear the extreme clothes. Right?”

Parton’s radiant baby-blue dress is not, by her standards, all that extreme; also keep in mind that Walters’s previous question was “Do you give your measurements?” (“No,” Parton replies politely, sitting back down.) The vibe is not great, but again: 1977. “No, it’s certainly a choice,” Parton allows, before explaining, with her trademark bottomless good cheer, why she has to look like this. “I don’t like to be like everybody else. I’ve often made the statement that I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable. That’s the easiest thing in the world to do.”

[Rob Harvilla reflects on the long career of the iconic Dolly Parton.]
“I don't know what he's up to, but he's got that Rodgers and Hammerstein look again.”
