The Forty-Five - Meet The Future Five

View this email in your browser
Hello,

This week we've been celebrating the new. The Future Five is our list of the artists you can't afford to miss in 2021. Not necessarily the biggest, but the musicians who really deserve your attention. Much like our tastes here at The Forty-Five, it's a diverse list spanning from disco-infused Americana to house-tinged neo-soul. Dive in!
LAVA LA RUE
Our January Cover Star, Lava La Rue is a multi-hyphenate artist and founding member of NiNE8: the buzzy London creative collective. "I get my rebelliousness and gender fluidity from Prince and Grace Jones, I get my UK vibe from Blur and The Streets and my skate punk vibe comes from Paramore". Gemma Samways gets to know a mould-breaking talent.
PEARL CHARLES
When we asked Pearl Charles to send us a video of her hanging out at home, we didn't imagine she would live in the middle of the desert, in a retro house of dreams.

The singer-songwriter could almost be from another time. Her Laurel-Canyon influenced tunes blend disco, country and cosmic riffs to joyful effect. "Psychedelics have been such a useful tool for me", she tells us in this interview, for The Future Five.

BONUS! Pearl has also talked us through the making of 'Magic Mirror', track by track, in our new podcast Sleeve Notes. Give it a follow, will ya?
LOWERTOWN
19-year-old Atlanta duo Olivia and Avsha make off-beat indie-pop in the vein of Kimya Dawson or Alex G. Spend a day in the studio with one of the newest additions to the Dirty Hit family.
AMBAR LUCID
The fourth member of The Future Five is the incredibly talented Ambar Lucid. Emma Holbrook talks to the musician about representation, identity, childhood trauma and her serene brand of pop.
PRIYA RAGU
If you're looking for a little escapism – or dreaming of a summer that GOES OFF – then stick on Priya Ragu's 'Good Love 2.0' immediately. The Swiss-Tamil artist makes bops with her brother, producer Japhna House, and with an album coming this year, we can't wait to hear more. Read the interview.
