Some Indie, some Blues, and some Electronic this week on Album Daily

Album Daily
#64 - The Week of February 8 - 12

Not sure what the biggest let-down was last night: the Chiefs' offense performance, the coin toss being heads (so much for tails never fails), or the missed opportunity of a surprise Daft Punk appearance during the Weeknd's Halftime Show. Yaaaaaaaa that one stings a bit. Not to fear, the Album Daily team has you covered with some tunes that will be sure to cure your Super Bowl hangover and get your week off to the perfect start!

Now, turn those speakers up!

* This is a guest review by Michael Citro: Michael's Record Collection is written by the 10-year host of Epic Prog with The Lurker, a popular internet radio show that ran from 2004-2014 and featured the best music in the progressive rock genre, as well as intelligent pop and rock. MRC's aim is to be the literary equivalent to going over to a friend's house to chill out and listen to music. Each issue strives to tell the story of an album, an artist, a song, a musical institution, a legendary moment in history, or a career. Readers can expect interviews, album previews/reviews, and even listicle-type content. Be sure to check him out!

Genre:
 Indie-Alternative
Release Date: February 13, 2007
Top Tracks: My Gift of Silence, Once, End of the World
Similar Artists: Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Radiohead

When Elton John sang "it feels so good to hurt so bad" in "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" it seems like he was talking about the kind of music Blackfield makes. The songs on the band's appropriately titled second album, 'Blackfield II,' are generally mournful and full of angst but they're weirdly beautiful, uplifting, and haunting at the same time. Think of the mood that "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead creates and you're in the right neighborhood. But the album is more than a mood. It's got hooks galore and true song craftsmanship.

An Anthem For The Optimistic, Pt. 2

The Landing

Genre:  Indie-Alternative
Release Date: May 15, 2020
Top Tracks: Billion, with a B + Consider the Crown
Similar Artists: Nick Leng, Young & Sick

Now here's an album you might need your tin foil hat on for. The Landing contemplates our place in the Universe and what it means to be an optimist through soothing piano, light + airy lyrics, and beat switch-ups to call home about. If you trust the minds behind Album Daily... for all that is good... please listen to "Billion, with a B" for one of the most creative songs we've ever posted. If you enjoyed Pt. 2, you can make your way over to An Anthem for the Optimistic, Pt 1. (pairs nicely with a UFO documentary).

American Love Call

Durand Jones & The Indications

Genre: Blues
Release Date: May 1, 2019
Top Tracks: Long Way Home, Circles, Sea Gets Hotter
Similar Artists: Leon Bridges, Charles Bradley

Mmmm mmmm MMMM. This is groovy. American Love Call has got soul, it's got strings, it's got wow-wow's, it's there for you when you're sad, and it's there for that very moment you see your boo after a long trip. The fun part is that this band is all in their 20's! Kudos to them for beautifully capturing the feeling of early 70's soul. Mmmhmmm.

Color Blind

Pluko

Genre: Electronic
Release Date: May 29, 2020
Top Tracks: used to, higher, rainbow
Similar Artists: Flume, Louis the Child

Buckle up folks, this one’s a trip. Pluko is an independent artist on the leading edge of the next generation of electronic producers. He layers his own vocals over synthy new-school beats to produce a complete project that has a track or two for everyone. It's mostly vibrant, upbeat, and ethereal - yet at times can be abrupt and challenging. What I love most, is that it just has this feel of a teenager messing around with a beat pad for hours on end. If you like a more polished sound, start first with “used to” and “your skin” … if you like it slow and low, check out “isittoogoodtobetrue?” and “I hope its not goodbye” … and if you’re ready to dial it up, peep “reality distortion” and “rainbow”.

Joie de Vivre

Casual Vice

Genre: Indie - Alternative
Release Date:  February 12, 2021
Top Tracks: Instead, Antihero
Similar Artists: Hippocampus, Cage the Elephant

When asked what listeners should take away from their upcoming EP, Casual Vice responded "let music be your guide - bring thoughtfulness, romance, and ceremony to everything you do, even if you’re fooling yourself a little bit." And what an awesome thought that is. This Southern California duo is comprised of two former indie-band frontmen, Kyle Krone and Brandon Hoogernboom. Now, they are joining forces to deliver an optimistic message of promise and purpose in their second project, Joie de Vivre. If the first two sun-kissed singles, "Instead" and "Antihero" were any indication of the quality of the project, the remaining tunes will be must-listen - check them out Friday!
