Abuse in the music industry is everyone's problem

View this email in your browser
Hello,

The last few weeks have been a lot, haven't they? To every brave person who has spoken out against abuse – and those who are still dealing privately with that pain – we stand with you. Too long have musicians, label bosses and men in all areas of the music industry got away with abhorrent behaviour. We have witnessed first hand the enablers – people who use: "they are smart, though," "they are funny, though," "they do write great songs, though" as excuses to not call people out. People who turn a blind eye because "it's not my business" or "we've always got on". The reason? Usually money. Sometimes, just wanting an easy life. But it's not good enough. So, if you have ever been one of the people who have stood by and watch it happen, if you know someone right now who is exhibiting any one of the traits we have heard detailed in the press, if you have a friend or colleague who you think is in a situation that is detrimental to their physical or mental health, consider how you can help – because it is your business. Women's Aid are a vital and wonderful resource. If you are worried about a friend – or yourself – and aren't quite ready to vocalise it, then you can email them and they will respond, with helpful, tailored advice. There are lots of different types of abuse, not all of it as shocking as the allegations made against Marilyn Manson, but one thing that all people who have been made subject to it have in common, is that they really need a friend.

Now. Enough of the heavy stuff and on to some music...
A LISTENING PARTY, ON YOUR TERMS
There are lots of great things about listening parties. But one of them, is hearing about how your faves made their new records, what the songs really mean and where they were when they came up with that hooky little riff. Our new podcast, Sleeve Notes, available on Spotify, combines all of those elements (without the need to stay up until midnight on release day). Listen to new music from the likes of Pearl Charles, Maggie Lindemann and Pale Waves, with an exclusive, track-by-track commentary from the artists themselves. Follow the podcast to keep on top of future episodes.
"I JUST FEEL LOVE REALLY INTENSELY"
Bless Claud. The alt-pop hero has got all up in their feels for new album, 'Super Monster', out yesterday It's the first release on our lord and saviour, Phoebe Bridgers', new record label, Saddest Factory. And we think it's really very good. Read our interview with Claud and our review of the album

THE RULE OF SIX
First James Acaster was arguing the merits of 2016's music, now our Jenessa Williams is going to bat for 2006. She talks to some former Indie Cindys about why the music of that year was so bloody good.
"PEOPLE SHOULD ACCEPT YOU FOR YOUR SEXUALITY – IT'S NOT LIKE YOU'RE KILLING CHILDREN"
Amidst in-fighting and a severely traumatic event, the story of Pale Waves' new record is one of self-discovery, loving who you are and shouting about it loudly and proudly. Heather Baron-Gracie and Ciara Doran of the band give Sophie Wilson the skinny on album number two and get a little closer to answering the question, 'Who Am I?'
THE UNSUNG
The stories of brilliant, offbeat, boundary-pushing female musicians have too often been forgotten. In her new column, journalist, Leonie Cooper, is shining a light on The Unsung – women whose influence can be heard in the music you listen to today but whose names aren't spoken nearly enough. Some, you may know, some you won't. All deserve your attention.
"I DON'T WANT TO MAKE OVER-THE-TOP, CARTOONISH MUSIC; I WANT MY MUSIC TO HELP PEOPLE"
Porter Robinson gave up being an EDM party boy in search of something more meaningful. What followed was a Grammy nomination and an army of people, connecting with his emotive brand of electronic music. Now he's back with new tunes and Ellie Hanagan had a chat to find out more.
