Nintendo dives into the archives for Detective Club, plus what can we expect at E3?
Retro sus. Web version | Unsubscribe Hey, issue #232 of Switch Weekly here, with the week in all things Nintendo. Hope you're well. This week saw the release of the two Famicom Detective Games, and I gotta say, I wish I had passed on New Pokemon Snap and picked this up instead. It's neat to see Nintendo dive deep into their archives and revisit something like this. I've linked up a few reviews below. Let me know if you've grabbed it! (Just hit reply). Next week sees nearly 30 games hitting the eShop, the biggest of which is Miitopia. Full list below as ever. Oh, and I've put together another Nintendo-themed crossword, so if you enjoyed that, be sure to seek it out further down in the issue. 🎮 Currently Playing — Yoshi's Island 2, New Pokemon Snap P.S — Don't forget, if you enjoy Switch Weekly you can support it either with a one-off 'coffee' or via Patreon. REVIEW Famicom Detective Club brings more great crime drama to the Switch — Andrew explains that despite being from the late 80s, "the most remarkable thing about these games is that they barely feel dated at all", and what it does lack in innovation is thankfully made up for with everything else: "gorgeous art, captivating writing, and more than enough mystery to keep you glued to your Switch". Mike Fahey at Kotaku seems impressed too saying that they've aged "surprisingly well". Andrew Webster // The Verge ▶ Famicom Detective Club retrospective — A great look back at the original Famicom Detective Club titles, the genesis of the series, and how the detective adventure genre found its feet in Japan. The Nintendo Chronicler // YouTube Famicom Detective Club: The history behind Nintendo's once-forgotten foray into visual novels Henry Stockdale // Eurogamer Rumour: The next Donkey Kong is being developed by the Super Mario Odyssey team— I tend to shy away from sharing rumours prominently in the newsletter, but this one seems interesting enough, and seemingly has multiple sources corroborating. It's been a while since Nintendo took on dev duties for a mainline DK game, so very keen to see what comes of this. Damien McFerran // Nintendo Life REVIEW Subnautica: Below Zero — "those who enjoy a more laid-back, albeit grindy, experience can safely dip their toes in these waters". Lewis Gordon at Wired found it a tad tedious. John Rairdin, also at NWR, checked out the original game too. Jordan Rudek // Nintendo World Report REVIEW Emily Archer and the Curse of Tutankhamun Mel Curtis // Big Daddy Gaming The rise and fall of Bidoof, Pokémon Snap’s unlikely hero Gira Jackson // Waypoint (Vice) Five predictions for the 2021 Nintendo E3 presentation Chirag Pattni // Nintendo Enthusiast INTERVIEW Why Aerial_Knight put his name on his game (which is out this week) Kate Gray // Nintendo Life We let professional nature photographers rate and roast our New Pokemon Snap pics — Now that New Pokemon Snap is out, the team at The Gamer decided to get some pros to judge their Pokemon picture taking skills. Stacey Henley // The Gamer Before I Forget: How two strangers made one of 2020's most moving games — Launched on PC last year, this is now available on Switch. This piece looks into how this game about 'love and memory' came about. Robert Purchase // Eurogamer The Switch’s printer partnership with Instax is silly – but in that most wonderful Nintendo way Alex Donaldson // VG247 Best Visual Novels for Nintendo Switch Gavin Lane // Nintendo Life Last month I shared a Nintendo crossword I had put together, and plenty of you seemed to enjoy it, so I'm back with another. Following feedback, I've added hints in addition to the usual clues, so if you get stuck tap on the reveal menu fo a bit of extra help. Reply to this email and let me know if you managed to complete it! 😊
