"Failed" Shark Tank Contestant Becomes 7 Figure Sprinkler Nerd

This week on the Niche Pursuits Podcast, we have a former Shark Tank contestant, Andy Humphrey, aka ‘the Sprinkler Nerd’!

Andy may not have gotten a deal on Shark Tank many years ago, but that hasn't stopped him from growing a successful business.

Andy now owns and operates Sprinkler Supply Store, an e-commerce business doing over $1 million in sales on Amazon, and multiple times this through the store’s website.

Listen, read, or watch Andy's entire story right here.

Through his business journey, Andy has started many e-commerce stores, beginning with his Christmas lights store ‘Super Twinkle’ all the way back in 2004.

Andy has almost 20 years of experience in e-commerce, and he shares the highs and lows of his journey - including what it was like to be on Shark Tank!

When he went on the show, he was looking for funding for his eco friendly lawn mower business. While he didn’t succeed in getting an investment from the Sharks, he learned a lot.

You can find out in the podcast here what the traffic bump to his website was like after the show aired!

In the podcast, Andy also shares a lot about the importance of building a brand, taking control of your traffic, the cons of selling on Amazon, and content marketing.

The marketing that he has got going on is really interesting.

For the sprinkler site, he has built a community of ‘Sprinkler Nerds’ (he’s the biggest of them all)! This includes a podcast, YouTube channel, and blog. He shares how he has built an engaged and excited audience around something as (seemingly) boring as sprinklers.

If you are running an e-commerce business, or you are selling anything online (including affiliate products), you will learn a lot from this interview.

Make sure you check out the podcast here!

Memorial Day Traffic Bump Or Slump?

How was your traffic on Memorial Day? (This past Monday in the US)

I’m sure that while sites in some niches received a huge bump in traffic, others will have experienced a slump.

That was the case for Own The Yard and Niche Pursuits - bump and slump!

Own The Yard had an increase of a little over 7% compared with the previous Monday.

I expect this is because more people were home in the yard thinking about what they could do. OTY has a lot of content on backyard games, gear, animals, and that sort of thing.

When people have a break, they also try and catch up on all the little things they’ve been meaning to do or buy and that’s reflected in more searches.

On the other hand, Niche Pursuits was down about 20% on the previous Monday.

While this could be in part because we didn’t send out our usual Monday email, it might also be because people didn’t have online business on the mind - they were taking a break!

Thanks again,

Spencer
