Swedish robots are coming for your ice cream

Robots aren’t bad in the kitchen: they can flip burgers, make pizzas, pour you a bowl of muesli or — once Swedish startup BonBot launches — serve you an ice cream.

BonBot is set to launch in Stockholm later this year, and its team say their robots can bring a better user experience to restaurants, as well as higher quality and more sustainable food.

Can Northvolt solve Europe’s impending electric car battery problem?

In the heart of Swedish Lapland, Northvolt, the battery company worth $11.7bn, is building a factory so large it will fill 100 football pitches and produce enough power to light 6bn bulbs a year.

Europe's car industry is betting on the company as it looks for a European manufacturer of batteries — a critical component for electric cars.

But can Europe bank on Northvolt?

The on-demand grocery battle is getting bloody. Here’s the state of play.

It's an exciting time for the on-demand grocery sector: huge funding rounds, reports of potential acquisitions, worker revolts and an enormous market to fight for.

Getir's just launched in Paris; Gorillas in New York; and JOKR, another competitor with deep pockets, has launched in Warsaw and Vienna this month. But it's not all easy — there are also reports that some of the companies are struggling to raise new financing.

Amy Lewin takes a close look at the market.

Startups can't ignore pronouns anymore

Thanks to digital technology, we're living in a golden age for self-expression. So why do many tech companies still only give people so few options to express their gender identity?

Startups need to create a gender-inclusive environment for both employees and customers, says Laetitia Wamanisa from social networking app Yubo.

Here's how.

Does construction have a sustainable future? We asked the experts

A third of the world’s global economy is industrial, and in Europe, the construction market alone is worth nearly €2tn. But construction is at a crossroads.

It's an industry that emits a huge amount of methane and carbon dioxide, so investors are increasingly focused on its green credentials.

Can the sector adapt, and what role do startups play in that?

News that Matters

💳 Visa buys Tink. Visa's signed an agreement to acquire Swedish open banking platform Tink for €1.8bn. If completed, it would be the third-largest acquisition of a European VC-backed fintech.

🛍️ UK grocery startup Dija is said to be exploring a sale or merger with a rival. The news comes just months after it officially launched in London.

🏫 More money for edtech. Sparkmind, the Nordic venture capital firm focused exclusively on the edtech sector, has closed its first fund at €55m.

🇷🇺 Leta Capital, a Moscow-based VC firm, has launched its third fund at $100m, focused on UK, European and US-based tech companies.

🇸🇪 And BackingMinds, the Swedish VC focused on overlooked founders, has raised a second fund of $60m. Backers include Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen and the family which owns H&M.

🇫🇷 French insurtech Hoggo, which wants to help companies simplify the management of their health and risk contracts into a single platform, has raised €11m in new funding in a Series A led by Partech.

🚴‍♀️ Deliveroo has won another workers' rights challenge in the UK courts. The IWGB union sought to challenge the platform's classification of riders as self-employed workers.

🔥 Israeli startup FireBolt, a cloud data warehouse provider, has raised $127m. The company only came out of stealth mode in December 2020.

Sifted Suggests

🖥️ Europe's lack of developers. The continent's got a talent problem: there just aren't enough people who know how to code. Now companies like Spotify and Deliveroo are taking things into their own hands by setting up in-house developer training programmes

⚽ As the Euros heats up, ex-professional footballer and founder of AxisStars, Louis Saha, looks at the similarities between what startups and footballers could learn about overnight success.

💰 JPMorgan and Nutmeg. Last week, the American banking giant announced its acquisition of UK robo-adviser Nutmeg. But was it a smart move for the bank, and how much did they actually pay? [Member]
