One spot on my chair based yoga course

It is my birthday !

Well... I was my birthday at the beginning of the week and I am still on holiday in the Cotswolds. It is an incredible opportunity to rest and recharge.
Emails this morning though and my husband talking about doing my accounts 🥱 reminded me that a world awaits out there and it is easy to be pulled back into the hustle and bustle. Instead I put the phone away and order breakfast.

This whole scene reminds me of designing and delivering yoga classes.
As a yoga teacher you probably go into your classes with the intention to deliver meaningful yoga classes that go beyond the asana and the physical aspects of yoga, but you also probably heard of students saying "I just need to move my body and stretch", or "I don't think I can meditate, my mind is just too busy".
So it is easy to be pulled back into designing asana centred classes, thinking of peak poses and beautiful asana sequences and there is nothing wrong with that, but we must intentionally pull ourselves back from that and try to incorporate other aspects of this beautiful practice into what we teach.

Some of the ways to do this is:
- Arrive early into the setting you teach (online or in person) and get to know your students. - Introduce an element of community, a safe place to practice, where you the teacher leads the way.
- Be flexible with your approach to asana. Observe your students and always adapt as you go. There is no point in practising asana if it causes your students strain and discomfort, so observing your students provides the cues you need to offer the ease and comfort instead.
- Allow for the breath to lead movement, introducing focus and coordination in your classes.
- Create opportunities to rest and reflect throughout the practice. The effect of yoga is mostly felt after its practice.
- Focus on the way it feels not the way it looks!! Throughout the practice offer other ways to access the effect or benefit of the practices more than simply replicating the way it looks.
- Mobility over flexibility... always. A locked long muscle needs strengthening and a locked short muscle needs mobilising. Focusing on mobility through the dynamic practice of yoga asana is essential.

In my trainings I expand a lot more on this and this is because it is important to seize this opportunity to do good by your students. Offer them practices that are meaningful and targeted to their needs.
