Most of us would argue that negotiating your salary is one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the hiring process. You Google salary ranges, dig through Glassdoor for even more intel, and finally throw out a number…all to later worry that your coworkers are being paid more than you. 

Aki Ito, a senior correspondent at Insider, admitted in a recent piece that the negotiation process for her current gig was tricky. 

“When it came time to negotiate my pay with Insider, I was more or less flying blind,” she said. “Eight months into the job, I still wonder if I left money on the table.” 

Some of us know this feeling all too well, especially with pay gap data showing that men are still making more money than women, and minorities are still earning less than their nonminority counterparts. 

“It's a system of secrecy that benefits employers,” Ito said. “By treating everyone's salaries as ‘confidential,’ companies are able to keep workers guessing about how much they're willing and able to pay.” 

Luckily, a salary reckoning is coming—many states are enacting new measures that will require employers to be more forthcoming about their compensation brackets. (More on that in a sec.) 

Salary transparency is far from a new concept—most government salaries are public. Not only does this process allow for more diverse candidate pools (which most industries also desperately need), but it also helps potential candidates feel more confident and comfortable during the hiring process.

Colorado currently requires full pay transparency, and other states are following its lead: 

• Starting next month, Nevada will require employers to provide salary information after an initial interview, and Connecticut will provide the salary range after extending an official offer. 
• Rhode Island will require employers to disclose salary information prior to discussing compensation as of January 2023.
• Maryland, California, Washington, and certain parts of Ohio already have laws in effect that require employers to disclose salary info upon request, so take advantage of these mandates and ask away.
