If you're spending time with something, you get to know it better, you're more likely to become a steward of the place.

Naturalist and designer Kathy Zarsky notices what we gain when we pay attention to nature. In this outdoor address for CreativeMornings/Austin, she invites us to pay attention not just to the beauty of nature, but to the interconnectedness of its systems, to its abundance under pressure. By understanding its adaptive genius, we can glean nature’s lessons for our own built environment and the way we move through it. Zarsky encourages us to walk and look slowly, to revisit the same places again and again, to build a kinship with the place we call home, just like relationships with people we love. Watch Kathy Zarsky’s gorgeous talk and let it fill you with awe.

Kathy Zarsky is a naturalist and founder of BiomimicryTX, a local node of the Global Biomimicry Network, sharing nature-inspired innovation through creative partnerships and events. Trained as an architect and one of the world’s first trained Biomimicry Specialists through Biomimicry 3.8, she’s adopted the core tenets of reciprocity and ecological intelligence.
