Album Daily Week #106 [November 22 - 26]

What's up music lovers! Thanks for tuning in this week to Album Daily. Welcome to all our new subscribers this week!

As you all know, we spotlight the best and the brightest of the musical world each week... but we also like to take a look under the musical hood to check out that weird knocking sound. This week's weird knocking sound is the latest Kid Rock song called "Don’t Tell Me How to Live". Mr. Rock ain't beating around the bush with this one... it touts such lyrics as "And these minions and their agendas / Every opinion has a millennial offended" and "But this Amendment One it rings true / And if you don’t dissent, b*tch, then see Number Two". This is some really moving stuff here folks. But perhaps the most egregious line comes on the final verse where Kid Rock compares himself to Bruce Springsteen with the lyric "Like Springsteen b*tch, I’m the motherf**king Boss"

Sure you are, Kid. Sure you are.

An Evening with Silk Sonic

Silk Sonic

Album Cover 2
Genre: Soul
Release Date: November 12th, 2021
Top Tracks: Leave the Door Open, Smokin Out the Window, Skate
Similar Artists: Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, James Brown

Much like when Lebron joined Dwayne Wade back in 2012, Silk Sonic is a musical super-team of its own, formed as the pair of pop icon Bruno Mars & up and coming hip-hop artist, Anderson .paak. The two became friends back in 2017 when .paak opened on Mars’ 24K Golden Tour and immediately hit it off. They paired up with Grammy winning producer, Disclosure, and began working on a rhythm and blues style collaboration inspired by the likes of Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Prince amongst others. The project was put on hold for a few years, but when the pandemic hit, the two found it the perfect time to resume and eventually release their soul-inspired R&B masterpiece. This album is simply delicious. The production is off the charts, and when paired with Mars’ sweet melodies and the occasional bar from .paak, it’s all too easy to get lost in the sauce and be transported back to a 70’s nightclub. Enjoy.

Stephen Stills

Stephen Stills

Cover 2
Genre: Folk
Release Date: November 16th, 1970
Top Tracks: Love the One You're With, Black Queen, Do For Others
Similar Artists: Bob Dylan, The Band, Dan Auerbach

Today we are throwing it way back to one on the greatest pioneers of rock music: Stephen Stills. Previously featured on Album Daily for his work with CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young), Stephen Stills self-titled first solo album is a classic by its own merit. For one, t is the only album to feature both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. On another note, Stills fills this album with all kinds of alternate guitar tunings, the influence of which can be heard on most records featuring sad guys who fixate on their guitars.

Stills who was the first artist ever to be inducted into Radio City Music Hall’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for two acts in the same night really lets his musicianship and rock star quality shine through on Black Queen. Check out this live performance and see if you agree. If you’d like a comparison to a more stripped down performance here he is on a live one take performance after a recording session with Judy Collins.

Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: July 9th, 2021
Top Tracks: Yellow Brick Road, Molasses (Walk The Walk), PTSD
Similar Artists: Oliver Tree, Laura Mvula, Fitz and the Tantrums

In short, I’d describe Dylan Cartlidge as an optimistic Oliver Tree. You can’t help but sing along and feel a bit grungy while listening to Hope Above Adversity.

It really makes me feel like dancing even though the lyrics are quite painful. The artist is very creative and write their own songs and even plays the piano which makes me feel more connected. Sucker Punch was special because listening to it during a really low point in my life really helped with lifting myself up. To this day, this album simply has no skip button for me. Every song is carefully crafted and feels like a really big story in its own. I can't recommend it enough. It's a bop and it hurts. LOL!
