How to make money from your passions

The greatest thing about the internet is the ability to extract money from doing things you love to do.

Aka your passions.

When I say “passions” I’m referring to creative hobbies and natural curiosities. If your definition of a passion is drinking beer and eating pizza, then your options to make money are more limited and you probably have bigger problems.

Let’s go over five things you need to consider if you’re looking to turn your passions into profits.

Passion: Which one should I focus on?

I speak to a lot of people who want to grow their audience on Twitter.

Almost every time, I see these new creators make the same mistake; focusing on too many topics.

Their strategy is what I call the “spray and pray” approach. Essentially, you create content about multiple topics hoping one of those topics will stick and will bring you a huge audience.

The reality is “spray and pray” leaves you with no audience because no one knows what you actually do.

What you want to do instead is pick ONE passion that you’re big on and go all-in on that for the first 6-12 months.

You will build an audience of rabid fans this way.

Once that first wave of the audience is established, you can start adding other passions to your content.

This is the exact same strategy that Jocko Willink used to build his 7 figure brand.

He started off with a podcast that spoke of human nature, war, and atrocities.

Then he expanded into leadership for children with his series of children’s books.

He also started talking about Brazilian jiu-jitsu and now owns an apparel brand that makes BJJ Gis.

Having one passion is also a test.

If you can’t consistently create content on your one passion for at least six months, then you’re either not cut out for it or it’s not really your passion.

Self Awareness and Fulfilment

Being a content creator is a balancing act because you have two hats to wear.

The first hat is the entrepreneur hat. That’s the hat you put on when you want to make money.

The second hat is the artist hat. That’s the hat you wear when you want to be creative and chase your curiosities.

Finding this balance is tiresome and can be extremely time-consuming.

Some people enjoy creating and building and end up working on their passion project to the point where they quit their job and spend more hours on their passion project than they did at their 9-5.

Some people have a great 9-5 and will happily stick to their day job and find an extra 10-15 hours a week to spend on their passion project out of sheer enjoyment.

There’s no right answer as to how much time you should spend on your project.

Just keep in mind there’s zero pressure to spend your entire life on it as many successful creators do.

Just as you don’t need to be a full-time bodybuilder to enjoy the gym, you don’t need to be a full-time creator to enjoy creating.

Getting Started

As Nike says, just do it.

The perfect time to get started is now.

Pick a platform.

Pick a passion.

Start creating and publishing.

All the technical details like optimizing your bio, choosing the right thumbnail, knowing the best time to publish, etc are things you should worry about much later.

For now, if you’re new to the game, your only objective is to turn creating into a habit.

Originality and Creativity

If I could pinpoint one big fear which holds people back from working on their passions is the idea that they can’t be successful if they are not 1000% super creative and original.

This is absolute BS.

Maybe in the early days of the internet, you had to be original, but these days, with so much content out there, you don’t need to be THAT original.

Originality can be as simple as reading a popular book and writing a thread about it giving us your unique and original thoughts.

In fact, I know a guy who makes an easy six figures just from reading and reviewing books.

If you don’t know how to be creative or original, pick a passion and a platform then do some research and see which creators are making content you enjoy.

After consuming their content, you’ll get some ideas of what you could do differently.

A lot of successful brands exist just by remixing old content so don’t be scared if that’s what you want to do.

Branding

I won’t speak too much about this because it’s a more complex topic that deserves a deeper dive.

But “branding” is essentially making you more memorable.

Everyone knows Nike because of three simple words; just do it.

Everyone loves Apple because of two simple words; think differently.

Branding is adding a message that has the memetic effect of associating something fun and positive with your name.

When people say your name (or if you’re anon your brand name), what do you want them to think of?

Start there.

Conclusion

For most people, the internet is a toxic place where they spend most of their day getting distracted by empty entertainment and distractions.

But for creators, the internet is an exciting place for you to have fun, pursue your passions and chase your natural curiosities with no limitations.

The best part? You can get paid for it.

All you need is to pick your passion, find a proven framework and stick to the plan.

The rest is up to you.
