Album Daily Week #113 [January 10th - 14th]

It's fruit week here at Album Daily. What's fruit week you ask? We're not too sure but two of our artists this week have fruit in their name and we think that's pretty neat. In that vein everyone should knock out their first new years resolution of eating more fruit.

You know what's another great New Years Resolution? Sharing Album Daily with your friends. Even if everyone just shared it with one friend, it would really mean the world to us!

Now, turn your speakers up and check out this weeks albums!

Hello, I Must Be Going!

Phil Collins

Album Cover 2
Genre: Rock
Release Date: November 5, 1982
Top Tracks: I Don't Care Anymore, You Can't Hurry Love, Thru These Walls
Similar Artists: Genesis, Toto, Mike & The Mechanics

For those of you that know Phil Collins, you already get it. For those of you wondering who this is, shame on you, and go watch Tarzan again because he dropped one of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time for a Disney movie. Hello, I Must Be Going! highlights drums, piano, and lots of brass and the fact that Phil Collins can do more with a single drum kit than most bands can do with an entire slew of musicians means that it's pretty damn good.   To double click on that topic, Phil Collins is a unique musician because he belongs to a very specific group; drummers who are also lead singers (as he played for the rock band Genesis). A little Album Daily trivia: can you name some of the other great classic rock bands that also feature a drummer lead singer on many of their top songs? How about: Neil Peart of Rush, Levon Helm of The Band, Ringo Star of The Beatles, Don Henley of the Eagles, and Gil Moore of Triumph to name a few!

Manhattan Special

Onyx Collective

Cover 2
Genre:  Jazz
Release Date: April 24th, 2020
Top Tracks: Blue Moon, Getting to Know You, My Favorite Things
Similar Artists:  Pharoah Sanders, Joe Armon-Jones, Jeff Parker

Manhattan Special is pure jazz club music. If you're not into that, I'd just turn that car around right now. It's different, off the wall, experimental and very, very chill. Kick back and enjoy… idk… a Manhattan? with this one while you reminisce on the speakeasy days

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do
Fiona Apple

Cover 3
Genre: Indie - Alternative
Release Date: June 18, 2012
Top Tracks: Every Single Night, Werewolf, Hot Knife
Similar Artists: Phoebe Bridgers, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap

Having trouble connecting to your feminine rage? Here’s the album from that. This Fiona Apple album was released in 2012, but its sharp bite still feels present. It is a starkly intimate look into Apple’s inward mind partially because of her writing which is filled with brutal phrases like “How can I ask anyone to love me when all I do is beg to be left alone?” and partly because it is entirely acoustic.

There is heavy kick drum, twinkling chimes, and staggered clapping. Apple’s voice itself is similar to a percussion instrument as she growls and whine. It might seem counterintuitive to jam so hard to such depressing lyrics, but I challenge you not to groove to the loops and rounds in Hot Knife. Get angry, get contemplative, and get it all out.

Check out Fiona and the drums in action here in the Hot Knife music video. The song and video which feature her sister is electric and shows just how powerful and nuanced Apple’s works is. Fetch the Bolt Cutters indeed.

Pony

Rex Orange County

Cover 4
Genre: Pop
Release Date: October 25, 2019
Top Tracks: 10/10, Always, Face to Face
Similar Artists: Still Woozy, Gus Dapperton, Daniel Caeser

Bedroom pop to a “t” is how I’d describe this 2019 release from Rex Orange County. Hella autotune, reflection on being a youth and heavily distorted chord progressions that I can just see being put together while playing on your midi-controller on your lap. Despite this patronizing description, I love this album! Catchy hooks, enough horns in the background to keep your hips swinging and Rex (known to his parents as Alex O’Connor) harmonizes quite well with himself over a loop pedal.

Rex appeared on Tyler The Creator’s critically acclaimed *Flower Boy* which reminds me... we should probably feature that album.

The Juicebox

Emotional Oranges

Cover 5
Genre: Hip-Hop
Release Date: June 11, 2021
Top Tracks: All That, Back & Forth, Bonafide
Similar Artists: Cautious Clay, Raveeena, UMI

Emotional Oranges are your classic artist duo. The two met at a bat mitzvah in 2017 while one was working as a vocal coach for Adele and the other, as an audio engineer for Drake. Like I said, your classic duo. They also both happen to use pseudonyms for names, “A and “V,” respectively. Just classic stuff. The Juicebox comes as their third studio album and features a wide range of influences, from R&B, and Soul, to Hip-Hop and Pop. It also hosts a A-list cast of collaborators including Vince Staples, Becky G, and Channel Tres. Simply put, it's a dope album you're not going to want to miss.
