Album Daily Week #114 [January 17 - 21]

Hello all and welcome to week #114. For this week's intro, we wanted to talk about non-other than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Where do music and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. intersect? The help answer that question we're turning back the clock to 1964. The setting is Berlin and the occasion is the very first Berlin Jazz Festival featuring the likes of Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt, and Roland Kirk. Although King Jr. did not attend the festival that year, JSTOR Daily lets us know that King Jr. wrote an opening address that was featured in the program and that opening address went a little something like this:

"God has wrought many things out of oppression. He has endowed his creatures with the capacity to create—and from this capacity has flowed the sweet songs of sorrow and joy that have allowed man to cope with his environment and many different situations.

Jazz speaks for life. The Blues tell the story of life's difficulties, and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new hope or sense of triumph.

This is triumphant music."

Martin Luther King Jr. felt that Jazz was the perfect soundtrack for Civil Rights and his opening address is just that: a beautiful stamp of approval.

Now, turn your speakers up!

Raise The Roof

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

Album Cover 2
Genre: Folk
Release Date: November 19, 2021
Top Tracks: Searching For My Love
Similar Artists: Jeff Buckley, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin

No one fact check me on this but I imagine the duo of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss might be one of the most lauded and awarded duos in music... okay fine I’ll fact check myself. Robert Plant has 7 Grammy’s and Alison Krauss has a whopping 27 (third most of all time). The only duo that I could intuit that had more would be Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Anyways, Raise The Roof builds off of the duo’s 2007 album ‘Raising Sand’. The pair are certainly not the first two I would think to pair up but something about it just works. Neither of the two try to outdo the other, rather they fit their harmonies neatly inside of one another. In terms of genre, the album probably falls into the folk-rock category but has a string of high-tempo joints that make for good dancing in the kitchen.

Deadpan Love

Cautious Clay

Cover 2
Genre: Pop
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Top Tracks: Wildfire, Roots, Agreeable
Similar Artists: Emotional Oranges, Kyle Dion, Orion Sun

Though he has released several EP’s, Deadpaan Love is Cautious Clay’s first feature length album. Clay has gained notoriety in recent years through his songwriting collaborations which household names like Taylor Swift and John Legend.  Indeed, Clay’s emotional lyrics in Deadpan Love are what sets this album apart. Said best by Mr. Clay himself, “Deadpan Love explores the ways I cope with the worst of what humanity has to offer. It’s about opposites—having an outer layer that’s tougher, this ‘deadpan’ state, and an inner layer of compassion, where you’re open to being there for the people you care about.”

Quarterthing

Joey Purp

Cover 3
Genre: Hip-Hop
Release Date: September 7, 2018
Top Tracks: Elastic, Aw Sh!t, 2012
Similar Artists: EARTHGANG, Towkio, Duckwrth

Once predominantly a feature rapper, Joey Purp steps into his own with his debut studio album, Quarterthing. He comes from the Chicago based school of rap, growing up alongside other legends of the city like Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, and eventually pairing up with local producers including Louis the Child and Tokimonsta. Mr. Purp takes the lead on Quarterthing and indeed, takes it to another level. Compared to his prior mixtapes, Quarterthing comes a bit more mature, definitely more polished, but still packs his notable signature punch. Read more about the inspiration behind Quarterthing including his childhood in Chicago and new life as a father.

Stress Dreams

Greensky Bluegrass

Cover 4
Genre: Bluegrass
Release Date: January 12, 2022
Top Tracks: Stress Dreams, Monument, Grow Together
Similar Artists: The Infamous Stringdusters, Yonder Mountain String Band, Trampled by Turtles

In reading a little bit about the 7th studio album from Greensky Bluegrass, I discovered a new word... “jamgrass”. Jamgrass seems to allude to the new-wave of bluegrass bands who play via Grateful Dead-like length jam sessions and improvisational furry. Bluegrass artists who fade into psychedelic distortions of their guitars. A move probably once thought to be faux pas in many bluegrass circles, now seems to be celebrated, championed by artists like of Billy Strings

Stress Dreams, despite it’s short 4-song length, takes the listener along winding curves on each of it’s feature-length songs. Building and slowly descending and building back up again via mandolin, banjo, upright bass and vocals... jaming in the grass all the way!

Time To Move

She Said Disco

Cover 5
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: March 11, 2016
Top Tracks: Falling In Love, I Can't Wait
Similar Artists: Duck Sauce, Purple Disco Machine, Vantage

Here’s probably the shortest feature on Album Daily to-date; a 3 song EP by She Said Disco. At just under 15k monthly listeners on Spotify and a pretty inactive Twitter account, this project feels like the side hustle of someone who just really loves disco music, and that makes us happy :)

This EP heavily leverages beat loops like you’ve come to know from a DJ duo like Duck Sauce (Armand van Helden and A-Trak) and then adds on that top layer of high energy, reverberated lyrics, and luscious orchestral arrangements that make it very, very disco.

Falling In Love is a great crowd pleaser and turn to I Can’t Wait for the slow dance change-of-pace.
