3 Tax Tips for Creators: From Crypto to Social Media Royalties

If you’re in the U.S., you likely fall into one of two categories: 1. I’ve already filed my 2021 income taxes and am getting ready to pay my first quarter estimated tax payments. or 2. I’ve got plenty of time to file. The deadline isn’t until April 18 this year.

Either way, we’ve put together some tax-related tips for creators who are growing a content business. And since we’re not tax experts, consult with a professional.

Crypto, NFTs, and social tokens: The IRS is interested in these and if you give, receive, sell, or trade them, you should be, too. Here are a few salient points from Next Advisor:

  • Buying virtual currency with U.S. dollars and keeping it within the exchange where you purchased it or transferring to a personal wallet doesn’t mean you’ll owe taxes at the end of the year.
  • Taxpayers who receive virtual currency as payment for goods or services must include the fair market value as of the date received in calculating their gross incomes.
  • Professional creators who mint NFTs are treated differently than hobby creators who do. Hobbyists usually pay capital gains taxes on those sales, while professionals would treat it as ordinary income.

Track your activity, particularly the price when received/bought. Expect the IRS to expand its guidance as it learns more about the sector. If you do airdrops or social tokens, pay attention to the news. And consult with a tax professional if any of this applies to you.

Payments from brands: You need to report any money received for sponsored content, advertising, or other brand deals. If it’s over $600, the company should have sent you a 1099-NEC form to file with your income tax return. But if they didn’t, you still should calculate and report the income.

You also must include any product- or service-related compensation. For example, if you received a “free” trip to Puerto Rico to write a series of travel articles, the value of the trip is considered income and must be reported. If the product or service is worth less than $100, you don’t need to report it.

Revenue on third-party platforms: Make money on a platform? Check to see if the platform already withheld your taxes (like YouTube) or expects you to pay directly (like TikTok).

  • NFT nod: Fiverr reports two-thirds of U.S. freelancers are serving the NFT industry. The number listing the service on Fiverr rose 278% between the third and fourth quarter 2021. (Wired)
    Tilt Take: Platforms selling NFT services can be helpful to understand the trending interest, but they aren’t necessarily predictors of the future.
  • TikTok made me: Amazon is capitalizing on #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt. It’s opened a TikTok digital store through March 7 with deals on those virally popular products. (Mashable; h/t tl;dr Marketing)
    Tilt Take: Big commerce is making money off the creators promoting products on TikTok, and the creators don’t make a cent. Think about that when you execute your next TikTok brand deal.
Audiences
  • Buying the listener: Audacy, which has a total audience of 60M listeners to its streams and podcasts, launched Audacy Digital Audience Network. Now, brands can buy access to listeners rather than a show or dedicated stream. (Inside Radio)
    Tilt Take: The people in your audience are what’s valued most by brands. Personalized access to targeted members can earn premium prices.
  • No reading lips: Instagram added auto-generated captions to feed videos. (Stories and IGTV already had them.) (Social Media Today; h/t Alice Fuller)
    Tilt Take: Captions aren’t just helpful to those hard of hearing. They also benefit people who can’t listen for other reasons (i.e., forgotten earbuds on the subway or sleeping baby in the room.)
Tech and Tools
  • Take 10: TikTok’s going long, letting creators do videos up to 10 minutes. (Variety)
    Tilt Take: Is anyone willing to stick with what makes them unique? YouTube wanted to attract TikTok fans with its Shorts program, and now TikTok wants to attract fans of longer videos.
  • New tweet: Twitter may add a tab dedicated to podcasts as revealed by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. (The Verge; h/t Created Economy)
    Tilt Take: Newsletters, Spaces, and now this. Twitter wants to become a content home for its audience, not just a purveyor of brief quips, news, etc.
And Finally
  • Truth trouble: Since January 2021, Twitter’s little known Birdwatch program has used volunteers to flag false or contested tweets, but it’s only “for an audience of only each other.” (The Washington Post; h/t tubefilter)
    Tilt Take: A volunteer fact-checking program probably isn’t the best move in this day and age.
  • Pinning history: Women’s History Month is being observed at Pinterest through its Elevates program. They’re helping 10 underrepresented businesses with monetary and strategic support. (Pinterest)
    Tilt Take: Always good to see social platforms identifying ways to help creators.
