How To Make the Most of Your Content Business Time

I know it. You know it. One of the biggest struggles is trying to manage your time or lack thereof. And yet, freedom and a flexible schedule are two of the most important reasons to become a content entrepreneur.

So, before you create the content, create a plan, set a schedule, and stick to it. Here’s some help on how to do that which is never easy:

Create a content calendar, so you know when topics are going to be covered and the timeline for creating them. This alone can save you time and relieve stress. Every great content entrepreneur knows what’s planned to be published in the next two weeks and has a great idea of what will be published in the next two months.

Budget your time for your content business. Do you need to create content 50% of the time to keep consistency in your content? Then do it. However, keep in mind that the average content entrepreneur spends only about 30% to 40% of their time on content creation. The rest is spent running and growing the business.

Create a schedule for the week. This schedule should align with your content calendar. It should also include time to complete business activities to keep your content business running.

Plan your day according to the freedom and independence you want as a content creator. Need to drop the kids off at school? Then plan to check emails, catch up on Twitter, read your newsletters, and finish other smaller tasks that can be completed in short bursts during this time. Save your more focused content for later in the day when you have long uninterrupted stretches of time.

Create to-accomplish lists. Use it each day. In fact, writing it the day before can be a great mind dump. Prioritize the items into urgent, important, and not important. This organization ensures you focus your attention to get the most important items done the next day.

Use tools and technology to help with your scheduling and content calendar. It can be something as easy (and free), such as Google Sheets and Google Calendar, Calendly, or TidyCal.

things to know

Money
  • Sponsoring creators: Ahrefs took its $200K paid traffic budget and spent it on 60 creator sponsorships. In return, they got 72 videos, 108 podcast episodes, 138 newsletter issues, 11 standalone projects and events, nine blog articles, and seven social media marketing campaigns. (Tim Soulo of Ahrefs)
Tilt Take: Though the results are still coming in, Ahrefs already plans to do more. It’s a great indicator that creators should be well prepared to do brand deals.
  • Smart move: NFTs allow creators to execute smart contracts. The advantages? Eliminating intermediaries. Reducing counterparty risks. Preserving the integrity of deliverables. (Matters Lab)
Tilt Take: Taking control of your content through an NFT gives you the chance to earn today and in the future without having to go through (and pay) a gatekeeper.
Audiences
  • Got personas?: Advice for brands interested in working with influencers is to define the personas they want to target. (Forbes Content Council)
Tilt Take: Do you know what personas (i.e., audience segments) your content targets? Even better, detail the personas you target in your about page or business bio to make it easy for brands to see.
  • Reeling Facebook: The Meta world is further united. You can now share Instagram Reels as recommended content on Facebook. (Adam Mosseri of Instagram)
Tilt Take: Create once, distribute twice is a good tactic.
Tech and Tools
  • Name change: Snapchat now lets users change their names without affecting their friends’ list, Snap code, score, etc. (Social Media Today; h/t Jeff Kidd)
Tilt Take: Great news for creators who regret what they chose for their handle before they decided to become a content entrepreneur.
  • Cool extension: Glimpse is a cool Chrome extension that shows Google Trends, adds actual search volume, related queries, and more. (Aleyda Solis; h/t David Iwanow)
Tilt Take: The freemium software can be great for creators who not only want to tap into trends but seek to use it as an SEO tactic, too.
And Finally
  • No politics: Some LinkedIn users have the option to choose if they want to “allow political content” in their feed preferences. It’s a pilot that could roll out to all users. To determine political content, LinkedIn is using its editorial team and flagging specific keywords. (Lindsey Gamble)
Tilt Take: Always happy to have the option to opt out of “politic” conversations on social media.
  • Do what you say: A TikTok meet-and-greet with Nicki Minaj for Black creators led to a Q&A “dominated” by non-Black voices. TikTok apologized. (NBC Connecticut; h/t Fundof)
Tilt Take: Umm … if you plan to do something, deliver what you said you’d do. That includes events, headlines, and more.
