257YEARS ago today the Stamp Act passed; it was the 1st direct British tax on American colonists and taxed all materials printed for commercial and legal use. Realizing that it actually cost more to enforce the Stamp Act in the protesting colonies than it did to abolish it, the British government repealed the tax the following year.

NEED-TO-KNOW

70DEGREES (F) above average in the Antarctic and 50 degrees (F) above average in the Arctic were the record setting temperatures noted over recent days as both the Earths poles simultaneously show significant jumps in temperature despite being in opposing seasons. Against a baseline temperature between 1979 and 2000 the whole Antarctic continent was showing 8.6 degrees warmer on Friday with the Arctic 6 degrees warmer.

0.3μmTHICK, the blood brain barrier acts as a security border for the brain however its strict admission policy can be a problem when it comes to dispatching drugs to treat brain diseases. Now a new study in mice has found a way to control the barrier at a molecular level and open it up for hours at a time. This window to promote drug delivery could lead to better treatments for Alzheimer’s, MS and brain tumours.

7.5mPEOPLE use Facebook in Russia and a Russian court has now branded it’s parent company ‘Meta’ an “extremist organisation” putting it on a par with ISIS. Interestingly VPN use in the country has gone up 2,700% since the invasion began and Russia hasn’t moved to ban Whatsapp which has significantly more users in the region (67m).

100JAMAICAN leaders have signed an open letter declaring “no reason” to celebrate the 70 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II because her leadership and predecessors “perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind”. 12MONTHS for adults and 6 months for children - these are the time periods in which ‘Prolonged grief disorder’ - an intense longing for the deceased - can be diagnosed as it officially becomes recognised as a mental illness.

3mSTUDENTS will suffer in Sri Lanka as the government is forced to cancel exams nationwide. The cancellations are due to an extensive paper shortage caused by the worst financial crisis since the region gained independence in 1948. The country continues to run low on food, fuel and pharmaceuticals.
