Day 87 / 365

141YEARS ago today P.T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey combined their two completing circuses to create the "Greatest Show On Earth".

RECC’E OF THE DAY

99%OF THE SKY will soon be mapped every 6 months by NASA’s new SphereX telescope set to be launched by 2025 - its short for ‘Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer’.

8INCH primary mirror of SphereX is much smaller than Webb’s 6.5m mirror and the two observatories will take dramatically different approaches to studying the sky.

0.1%OF THE SKY was mapped by Hubble in 30 years by comparison.  While it won’t be able to see objects with the same level of detail as targeted observatories like Webb, it can answer questions about the typical properties of those objects throughout the universe.

97COLOUR BANDS will be used to scan the sky and create a map of the cosmos unlike any before; one which is aiming to benefit astronomers around the world.

NEED-TO-KNOW

15bnCUBIC METRES of natural gas will now be supplied to the EU market after a deal was reached with the US aimed at reducing EU reliance on Russian fossil fuels. This deal however represents only 10% or so of the 155bn cubic metres Russia supplied the EU in 2021; 40% of it’s gas needs.

30%+OF FOOD produced for human consumption becomes waste, with entire shipments rejected if bacterial growth is detected.  Now a lab-made nanotexture - inspired by the bacteria-killing wings of insects - has been produced to kill up to 70% of bacteria and retain its effectiveness even when transferred to food packaging plastics meaning it can vastly improve shelf life and reduce waste.

SHOULD-KNOW

20MILLISECONDS of storing a ‘qubit’ or ‘quantum bits’ within a crystal is a record breakthrough for quantum memory. The result of this experiment could allow for the development of long-distance ultra-secure quantum telecommunications networks within 10 years.

500OR SO AMINO ACIDS have been identified in nature but just 20 make up the proteins found in the human body. A number of these 20 proteins can actively harm us; proteins on the surfaces of viruses that let them latch on to new cells or the damaged proteins that cause cancer cells to grow uncontrollably. Now researchers announced they have created software that can design a separate protein that will stick to a target protein and potentially block its activity. A breakthrough that could one day save lives.

9OUT OF 17 is the groundbreaking majority in Portugal as female ministers outnumber male ministers for the first time ever. The socialist-majority government will take over on March 30th with a revised cabinet that has shrunk by 20%.

GOOD-TO-KNOW

$2.4mSELLING PRICE has been achieved for a copy of the first ever Marvel comic book published in 1939. The book is a ‘pay copy’ meaning the publishers handwritten notes to track payments owed to contributing illustrators and writers is included.

2.5bnACTIVE ANDROID users worldwide use 3bn devices. Now the global science project is looking to link as many of these devices as possible to active satellites in a bid to vastly improve weather forecasts across the globe by using machine learning to interpret data from the phones’ GPS receiver.

91YEARS since the phrase ‘quantum physics’ was defined, researchers at the University of Bonn have created a gas of light particles that can be extremely compressed. Their results confirm the predictions of central theories of quantum physics and could also point the way to new types of sensors that can measure minute forces.

SIGN-OFF STAT

40LBS of skin is shed by a human in their lifetime, we shed so fast that we completely replace our outer skin every single month.
