One Person Business - One Person Business: Not Boring
Not Boring, by Packy McCormick, is the best newsletter that you didn’t know you needed - he explores everything business in the most entertaining way possible. But you might be asking “Why is a newsletter making it to this publication?”. And my answer to you is: it’s a creator’s economy, and content is king. We’ve reached a moment where anyone can build audiences out of pretty much anything and turn their passions into livelihoods. The meaning of “having a job” has changed dramatically, and if you’re good at something, you can make money creating content out of that. And that’s exactly what Packy did. And is doing. His newsletter, Not Boring, is 100k subscribers big and growing. And it’s not as if he is doing something completely new or innovative. There are a gazillion newsletters out there that do exactly the same thing. But he does it with such excitement and passion that people want to read it. Now, the funny thing: this is not a paid newsletter. But it’s the perfect example to show the power of a following or a community. Packy leverages sponsorships to generate revenue from the newsletter. These sponsorships are relatable to his audience, so it doesn’t feel as if he is trying to “shove” something useless up their throats. I couldn’t find specifics on Not Boring’s revenue numbers, but I did find a tweet by Packy that might give you an idea of how much he is bringing in: I want Not Boring to make $1 million this year.
Which sounds fucking crazy for a free newsletter but I think it’s possible. Before you go on and decide to start your own newsletter, please remember one thing: content creation is hard. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and it might not even happen. The odds are stacked against you. But I did find one thing that can increase your chances: consistency. You might be the best in your field, but if you only write about it once a year, you won’t get anywhere. On the other hand though, even if you’re not good at something, but keep pushing content out, people will notice. You’ll improve with time, and increase your odds of making something out of nothing. Content is king, and consistency is key. The State of the Creator Economy
And a tweet for youMost people need consistency more than they need intensity.
Intensity:
-run a marathon
-write a book in 30 days
-silent meditation retreat
Consistency:
-don't miss a workout for 2 years
-write every week
-daily silence
Intensity makes a good story. Consistency makes progress. If you like One Person Business, please do ”Add to address book”, reply or leave a comment.
