This week’s money mood: Hitting the ground running

Starting a new job or role can be one of the most exciting, exhilarating — and sometimes stress-inducing — things we do in our career. In the midst of this Great Reshuffle, I know a lot of you are in that boat (or were very recently, or will be soon!).

Truth: You worked really hard to get here. So whether you’re attending orientations or sending that “I got a promotion!” update on LinkedIn, don’t forget to take some time to celebrate yourself. Pace yourself, continue to practice self-care, and think about how you can not just survive in your role, but thrive in your role — new or not!

For example: How will you build relationships as you ramp up? What boundaries will help you protect your time, energy, and purpose? What additional support do you need as you learn the company or role?

These questions — and all the resources below — will help you position yourself for success beyond your tenure as the newbie on the block.

Rooting for you with streamers and balloons!

New job, new journal prompt!

First of all: Congrats! The fact that you’re here means you’re already crushing it. Now it’s time to catch your breath — and reflect. Here are some journaling questions to help you do that:

1.

What does your day-to-day look like now? What do you picture it looking like 90 days from now?

2.

What do you want to achieve in your first 30, 60, and 90 days on the job? Be as specific as you can.

$$ win of the week

“I've been with my company for decades, but decided to see what was out there. I received three offers, but turned them all down — after comparing the benefits (financial, health, flexibility), it did not make sense. I did use the offers to leverage a raise, a commission, and a new position doing the things the other companies offered. So a win-win!”

— Carla, an Elle Raiser from Encinitas, CA

The not-great news: California’s law requiring women on boards was struck down by a judge.

The way-better-totally-awesome news: The signing of a landmark union contract that (finally!) guarantees equal pay and World Cup prize money for men and women pro soccer players in the US. Also included: child care, parental leave, mental health support, equal quality of venues and field playing surfaces, and more.

Aubrey Hirsch’s latest graphic essay reminds the people in the back that breastfeeding isn’t free— or a solution to the formula shortage.

A new (unsurprising) survey shows that 79% of employees want greater pay transparency.

If you’re looking for ways to support the Black community in Buffalo, here’s a list of local orgs that do just that. (There’s also a part two.)
