BUY LIST UPDATE: I’m under a lot of pressure to find plays for you folks (both long & short) to add to the BUY LIST. However the market is too low to short & too bearish to buy. Valuations, given my economic outlook, are garbage in my opinion. Stocks could certainly go lower … indeed they SHOULD go lower. The earnings I’ve been tracking this season are nothing more than underwhelming. In the interim I’ve been posting the daily insider buys/sells above $50,000 in the paid section of the newsletter (under yesterdays earnings tracker), which can generally be used for a quick & easy profit depending on the market conditions & circumstances surrounding the buy/sell. You will note that insiders are selling much more than they’re buying. I’ve also posted the upcoming IPO Lockup & Quiet Period expirations in the paid section which are usually preceded by selling pressure.

YESTERDAYS HOUSING DATA: April new home sales were expected to come in at 750,000. The actual numbers were 591,000, a difference of 159,000. Just to give you an idea of how big this is, assuming that each home sold for around the national average of $350,000, we’re looking at a difference in $55.65b from what was expected. Not a great indicator for homebuilders. Will home values come down? I don’t see how they can’t. It seems to me the Fed has been a day late & a dollar short on taking action on inflation & as a result home equity looks to be in a position to take a serious hit. Affected companies are BZH, MHO, DHI, TPH, LEN, NAIL, BRP, HOV, MDC, TOL, SKY, PHM, NVR

TODAY’S ECONOMIC CATALYSTS: April Durable Goods Orders (0830ET) & FOMC Minutes (1400ET) will be reported today. Durable goods are those goods, usually more expensive than disposable goods, that are expected to last longer than 3 years. Consensus estimate is a 0.6% increase month over month. March came in at 0.8% MoM. A lower than expected, yet significant enough, increase/decrease in durable goods orders, would almost certainly move markets.

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) Minutes are simply the transcript of what was discussed the last FOMC meeting (when they decided to implement the rate hikes & start to offload the balance sheet). Yes this will move markets! It always does.
