There was a lot of talk about removing likes from social media in late 2019.

Instagram was the center of attention.

There were accusations about how "like and follow culture" affected people's mental health.

Social media has become our way of seeking out other people's attention.

We post to get that attention in the shape of likes and follows.

As a creator, being on social media is a necessary evil.

It's the easiest —and cheapest— way to get attention on you and your projects.

But it comes at a price.

When you post something, the quality of it seems to be defined by how many likes you get.

Heck, your quality as a creator seems to be defined by how many followers and likes you have.

We are all getting it wrong, though. As creators, we are focusing on the wrong things.

Followers, likes...those are things we CAN'T control.

Those are things that depend on external elements like the audiences’ mood or the algorithm (or Elon Musk 😅)

The only thing YOU CAN control as a creator is how much you show up.

That's what we should be focusing on.

I dare you that, for the next 30 days, you make the switch.

Instead of counting how many likes or follows you are getting, celebrate posting for 30 days in a row.

A tweet, an Instagram story, a LinkedIn post...You name it.

Focus on the process rather than the outcome. 

Oddly enough, that will lead to the outcomes you want.

You could learn more practical things about marketing from this 1 newsletter than you can a 4-year $200k degree in marketing...

I particularly like this format because it is visually appealing.

It's also very helpful to challenge people's perceptions of what it takes to do something.

It begins with a very short list of "what people think it takes.".

It follows “with what it really takes”, and a very long list of things.

It can be applied to virtually any niche.

When it comes to your niche, what's the one thing that people keep thinking is "easy to do" but isn't?

This format is the perfect way to share it.

My Twitter friend Kevon Cheung is launching his book “Finding Joy in Chaos: How to Build Your Twitter Presence so Connections and Opportunities Come Find You” today.

It’s a Twitter book giving creators the fundamentals they need to build a successful Twitter presence, including connecting who they really are in real-life to their online identity.

The book is all about understanding your goals with Twitter, enjoying the process, and building your influence every day.

I think it’s especially interesting because It challenges conventional wisdom and clarifies confusion around Twitter.

A few days ago I asked the following question to my Twitter audience 👇

There were 121 responses. That’s a lot of people giving Twitter tips!

How did it work so well?

Imagine I asked “What is your best Twitter tip?”

I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten half the engagement I did.

But I asked people to share their best Twitter tip in only “one sentence”.

It's a challenge. That's why people love it.

Here's why it worked:

• People love to give their opinion on things
• People love to be challenged

That tweet makes it easy for them to do both.

How can you apply it to your own content?

You need two things:

1. A question related to your niche
2. A challenge for the audience

What’s that for you?

Remember, try to put some constraints on how people can respond. Ask them to say it in one word or one sentence.

Be even more creative: It might be a good idea to ask them to describe something without using certain words or something along those lines. Have fun!

Another example I really liked is this one by Roberto:

It's playful and challenging. It's a win-win because he gets to promote an upcoming product and people get to have fun with it.

It's pretty easy to replicate, isn't it?
