The Social Capital Atlas

If the social network era is indeed coming to end, we will do well to mine what value we can from them. Social Capital Atlas is one such effort - data mining 21 Billion connections to try and find correlations between friendship density, location and income distribution. The findings? The income level of your friends has an impact on your own level of income. PDF here, but the website is a superb interactive experience, worth diving into.

Overcoming The Talent Shortage

Brainfooder Kevin Wheeler with another superb speculative essay, contextualising the talent shortage with demographic decline which ultimately must translate into less workers available to do the work. Increasing salary is robbing Peter to pay Paul and - when you think about it - so is immigration. We need to prepare to build companies which simply require less, more productive workers. Implications for recruiting should be clear.

July 2022 Labor Market Update

Another labour market report, this time with US data. Brainfooder Sarah Ali, Senior Economist at Radancy, has promised me a monthly cadence on these, so I hope you find them useful! Particularly interesting of the ‘quit rate by industry’ - an important metric which helps explain the incongruity between talent shortage in one place, and mass lay offs in other. Last one of labour market data! This one from LinkUp indexes public job listings and charts them per company against when hiring freeze or layoffs were announced. Big tech aren’t high volume hires in the context of the overall economy but they do have market moving impacts whenever their hire or don’t. Accessible post, worth a look.

So I lied when I said it was the last one on labour market economics 🤣. This is is great though, as it provides evidence on what we intuitively know is true anyway - that going to another employer is the best way to increase your compensation over the long term. It’s an old story with a new twist, as countries try to balance competing the workers, whilst doing right by their people. Lex Fridman is an example of doing the irrational (ridiculously long multi-hour interviews) but doing it so well that it becomes a defensible moat that few can ever cross. His interview with Brian Armstrong is the CEO of Coinbase is an example of this genre - wide ranging, personal and covers a great deal of recruiting - fascinating to hear a CEO’s thought process on hiring, as the company scaled.
