Virtual WordCamping | Marketing Junto

My Take

This past weekend was WordCamp US (#wcus) in San Diego, California. Since I'm on the opposite side of the country, I didn't attend in person, but I did watch it virtually. What I love about conferences in 2022 is that attendees don't have to be in person to watch the presentations. And with Twitter and the hashtag #WCUS you could, sort of, interact with the hallway conversations a bit.

Don't get me wrong, nothings better than being at a conference in person, but the way conferences are put on has changed since 2020 and the outbreak of Covid. Organizers are realizing that there's an untapped market of people who want to consume the content, but for whatever reason can't be at the event in person.

One downside, the SWAG. I'm missing out on all the fantastic goodies you get from vendors at WordCamp. Oh well. I know my wife is thrilled that the house isn't full of random stuff that I'll never use. Though those t-shirts are handy. My conference t's are getting a bit ratty.

Have you attended a conference this year? Was it in person or virtual? How did it go?

Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of the WordPress open source project and chief poohbah over at Automattic (think WordPress.COM) announced that WordCamp US will be coming back east to the National Harbor in Maryland (just outside of Washington D.C.) in 2023! What's more it will be from August 21st through the 25th, because it will be tied to the new community summit! To say I'm stoked is an understatement. I will do my best to be there!
