[Crew Review] Amazon slashes storage limits again

Several Amazon third-party sellers have reported that their inventory storage thresholds were reduced by 10% to 25%. It’s rather odd since the company announced it has excess storage because of slower sales.

Will the limits go back to normal soon?

Amazon Top Terms

We’ve taken some keyword data from Amazon Brand Analytics to show you the top 10 terms that rose in popularity on Amazon between October 9th and October 22nd.

This week, the term “dearra taylor storefront” made its way into our top 10 list, taking slot #6. De'arra Taylor is a social media sensation and businessperson from the United States. She recently posted a tweet launching her new Amazon storefront.

This term has caused an increase in sales in related products, going from selling 8 units per day to 216 units per day in the last few days.

Opening an Amazon Storefront can help you differentiate your brand from your competitors, as well as build trust among customers.

What Google’s Profit Drop Tells Us

For the first time since it was first publicly reported in Q4 of 2019, Alphabet-owned Youtube’s ad revenue has declined. For Q3 2022, the reported revenue is $7.07 billion, short of the expected $7.42 billion.

Alphabet’s $69.09 billion revenue fell short of the $70.58 billion estimate and represents a growth of just 6%—the lowest it's been since 2013, except for a period during the pandemic. Its net profit of $13.9 billion is 27% less than the year earlier. Except for Google Cloud’s revenue stream, all of Alphabet’s numbers are less than impressive.

This underwhelming number is because of a slowdown in online ad spend, especially by firms in the insurance, mortgage, and cryptocurrency industries. Ultimately, it all boils down to the overall economic challenges, including the abnormally high inflation.

Google currently has the biggest slice of US digital ad revenue, so its slowdown is bad news for digital ads in general. Even Amazon, which currently exhibits the fastest growth in this area, slowed down in Q3 despite Prime Day being moved to July.

Alphabet plans to combat these challenges by decreasing headcount growth, realigning resources, and moderating operating expense growth.

Another Suit vs. the Buy Box

There’s no shortage of lawsuits against Big Tech outside the US. The latest entry to the list is from the UK and is expected to be filed by the end of October, alleging anti-competitive behavior of Amazon through the Buy Box.

Dubbed the “Amazon UK Buy Box Claim,” the complaint will allege that Amazon’s algorithm favors its own products or those of sellers who store and deliver through the company, e.g., FBA sellers. The claim is led by the law firm Hausfeld & Co LLP and funded by LCM Finance, a litigation finance company.

According to Hausfeld & Co, all persons who purchased on Amazon since October 2016 are eligible to be claimants in the suit. They will be asking for more than $1 billion in damages for the alleged anti-competitive behavior.

Amazon, on the other hand, is confident that the suit has no merit and emphasized that more than half of the physical products sold on the UK site are from third-party sellers.

Did Jassy Violate Labor Laws?

As Amazon’s new frontman, Andy Jassy can’t keep silent about one of the most controversial issues faced by his company: labor unions. But, according to a complaint filed by a National Labor Relations Board official, some of his statements about the topic violated the law.

The complaint points to Jassy’s interviews made earlier this year, specifically an April interview with CNBC and another with Bloomberg Television in June. Jassy said employees would be better off without unions and provided reasons for the opinion, including the fact that unions are more bureaucratic, which slows down improvement. He pointed out that a more direct relationship with management will help speed up the process.

Amazon has to respond to the complaint in writing by November 8, and its representatives will have to attend a scheduled hearing in February.

On the other hand, an Amazon spokesperson stated that the complaint is without merit as Jassy’s comments are protected by the National Labor Relations Act.
