Issue 240 - Why Tesla removed Radar and Ultrasonic sensors?

FSD Beta

FSD Beta 10.69.3 release notes 📷
FSD beta 10.69.3 is now going to Tesla employees for testing, here are some interesting bits from the release notes:
  • Reduced false slowdowns for pedestrians near crosswalks.
  • Improved decision-making for short-deadline lane changes.
  • New "road markings" module which improves the topology error at intersections.
  • Reduced incorrect lane assignment of crossing vehicles by 45% and reduced incorrect parked predictions by 15%.

I love the 360 setups for FSD videos.

Semi & Model Y

Tesla Semi at Silver Springs ðŸ“¹
It seems to be quickly accelerating from stopping at the roundabout. I can't wait to see some of these on the road!

How is the paint in a brand new Model Y? 📹
In this video, Out of Spec Detailing, takes a deep dive at the paint quality of a Model Y Performance built in Freemont. The verdict? Tesla is improving their paint quality!

Tesla AI

Why Tesla removed Radar and Ultrasonic sensors? 📹
There has been a lot of speculation about why Tesla removed the radar a few months ago and the ultrasonic sensors more recently from their cars. In this interview with Lex Fridman, you can hear Andrej Karpathy, former director of AI at Tesla, explaining why. TLDR; more sensors don't always mean better, in this case, is a distraction to the system and not worth having them in the car.

Great, and long, interview with Andrej by Alex Fridman. This is the full clip of the previous entry. If you are curious to know more about how Andrej sees the world, AI, and others, give it a listen.

Software Updates

OS app shows FSD Beta eligibility 📷
Or at least it does for this owner. Take a look if you have the latest firmware and iOS app.

Tesla to add radio traffic announcements 📷
Tesla's software update 2022.40.1 has an image for, what we assume is, a future feature to add radio traffic announcements. This feature, present in many cars, ensures the driver will get local traffic reports regardless of what they are listening to. Other speculations and possible features are listed in the article.

Europe & China

Refreshed Model S deliveries starting in the EU 📷
Great news if you are one of those waiting for their refreshed Model S in the European Union. The screenshots seem to be for a Long Range one, given the rims.

Tesla Referral Program in China 📷
We mentioned a couple of newsletters ago that Tesla seemed to have introduced some new text regarding the referral program. Earlier this week, Tesla announced their referral program in China and this post has some screenshots. In the new program, if someone uses your referral code you get 3,500 points and current owners buying another car get 7,000 points, those points can be used later on for merchandising and accessories.

🤓 What the acronym

As a Tesla fan, I find myself sometimes having to remember what are all those acronyms, here is a list of the ones you can find in this issue.
  • AGI - Artificial General Intelligence
  • AI - Artificial Intelligence
  • FSD - Full Self-Driving
  • VR - Virtual Reality
