What do new documents reveal about how Twitter handled the 2020 Hunter Biden report?

  1. Summary
Internal Twitter documents published by journalist Matt Taibbi on Friday detail the company's handling of the New York Post's 2020 report on Hunter Biden. The files do not change the outline of what is already publicly known about how Twitter handled things, but do offer insight into the internal debate. The files show one executive was unconvinced that the allegation the story used hacked materials justified its suppression.

Taibbi said Twitter regularly took removal requests from well-connected third parties, and that requests from both the Biden campaign and Trump White House were honored. He said the requests favored the Democratic Party because that is who most staff supported according to campaign donations, but did not provide evidence of moderation being biased.

The documents do not show evidence of outright coercion of the company, and government requests do not inherently violate the First Amendment. The documents did show that Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat, privately warned the company it risked violating First Amendment principles.

Should states divest from asset managers with ESG policies?

Context: Florida divests $2 billion from BlackRock over firm's ESG policies.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - The policies promote long-term economic thinking. The environment is an economic issue. Worker treatment and other types of justice issues are also long-term economic problems that can impact the long-term value of a company as well as areas where the company may be open to legal jeopardy. If the company is badly managing long term returns that is one thing. But these policies and positively impact long-term returns. And retirement funds are interested in the long not short-term returns.
