Why is the father of the Highland Park shooting suspect being charged?

Source: Pew Research Center

  1. Summary
Robert Crimo, father of the man accused of a mass shooting at a July 4 parade in Highland Park, IL, was charged with seven felony counts of reckless conduct for his role in helping his son acquire a gun license. He received seven charges for the seven deaths his son caused, and each count carries a maximum term of three years in prison.

Crimo's son had previously attempted suicide in April 2019, and in September 2019 was accused of making threats to his family. Months later, in December 2019, Robert Crimo sponsored his son's application for a gun license. His son was 19 at the time.

Crimo's attorney called the charges "unprecedented" and said it should alarm all parents, "who according to the Lake County State’s Attorney knows exactly what is going on with their 19-year-old adult children and can be held criminally liable for actions taken nearly three years later." While such prosecutions are rare, a similar case occurred last year in Michigan, when charges were filed against the parents of a school shooter.
