Why has Los Angeles' new mayor declared a state of emergency?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Source: Los Angeles County Homelessness Initiative

  1. Summary
Los Angeles' new mayor, Karen Bass, officially declared a state of emergency over homelessness on her first day in office. Mayor Bass had made homelessness a central issue in her mayoral campaign and eked out a victory against billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who campaigned on public safety.

Mayor Bass said that the emergency declaration will allow the city to quickly marshal resources to acquire interim and permanent housing. Her plan entails clearing out encampments while leasing out entire hotels and motels for the homeless. Bass says she plans to get 15,000 homeless people into housing in her first year in office.

About 69,000 people in Los Angeles County are homeless, which is 40% of California's homeless population. Los Angeles spent millions in pandemic funding to address homelessness, but those programs are ending even as its homeless population has grown 12% since 2020.

Should cities seeing a surge in respiratory illness hospitalizations mandate masks?

414 votes, 69 comments

Context: Cities consider mask mandates as hospitals reach capacity from influx of flu, RSV, and Covid-19 cases.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Masks seemed like a reasonable response at the beginning of the pandemic. [...] Requiring masks every time there's a breakout of typical, seasonal viruses is going to cause more fatigue and less compliance when it really matters. Exposure time is the key. The amount of time someone spends in confined spaces and/or recirculating air systems where someone is infected is the real factor.
